JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Colter Bay Visitor Center is located on the beautiful shore of Jackson Lake in the northern end of Grand Teton National Park. Colter Bay is a hub of summertime activity where popular destinations include a marina with boat rentals, boat launch, campground, lodging, general store, laundromat, visitor center, amphitheater, and more! Many visitors return year after year to this location with their families. The primary duties of this position are providing excellent customer service to visitors from around the world and from diverse backgrounds. Volunteers will work with a creative and passionate team of people including other volunteers, National Park Service staff, and interns. Specific responsibilities will include answering questions and providing information at a busy visitor center desk, roving park trails and facilities to provide information, answering the general park phone line, and serving as a welcoming host to Grand Teton. A full hookup RV site will be provided for volunteers in exchange for a 32 hour/week work commitment. RV sites are ~1 mile away from the Colter Bay Visitor Center. Volunteers will need to provide their own RV and have a demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service in fast paced work environments. Main Goals for the Position:
Colter Bay Interpretive Volunteers directly support interpretive operations based in the Colter Bay District, by providing front-line visitor services. This includes working the busy information desk, answering phones, roving trails, and offering formal and informal programs, as needed. Colter Bay Visitor Center receives 3,000-4,000 people daily, often swearing in 100+ Junior Rangers daily in peak summer. Volunteers assist visitors by providing information needed to have safe, positive, and meaningful experiences in the park. Volunteers ensure that visitors of all backgrounds have opportunities to access, enjoy, and be inspired by the park and its resources, programs, and recreational activities. Colter Bay Interpretive Volunteers support the NPS Mission by ‘providing for the enjoyment of future generations.’
Description of Duties:
Visitor Services Responsibilities:
• Staff the information desk and answer a variety of visitor questions, including recommendations for day trip itineraries, hiking destinations, and wildlife viewing locations. Interact with people of all backgrounds and abilities, including many children through the Junior Ranger Program.
• Answer the public phone line and respond to a variety of visitor questions and needs.
• Drive a government-owned vehicle (GOV) to various trailheads and turnouts in the park, to interact with visitors, answer questions, and provide education, as needed.
• Present formal and informal interpretive programs (as needed).
• Shares details on park regulations, safety guidelines, and resource protection practices and promote awareness of park rules and etiquette. Primary objectives include setting visitors up for success while minimizing impacts to park resources.
• Sets and maintains a positive example by obeying all regulations of the park.
Parkwide Volunteer Expectations:
• Wears volunteer uniform according to National Park Service (NPS) volunteer uniform standards.
• Demonstrates a courteous, customer service attitude with visitors and colleagues. Carries out all duties in a collaborative, professional and respectful manner.
• Adheres to NPS, Grand Teton and work group procedures, guidance, and policies. VIPs are covered by and held to all anti-harassment policy, standards, and expectations.
• When in uniform or perceived to be a park representative, VIP supports and explains agency policies in a nonpartisan, courteous way.
• Follows designated chain of communication and consults supervisor when uncertain.
• Contributes to a safe, positive working environment. Grand Teton has zero tolerance for hostile behavior in the workplace.
Qualifications / Skills Needed:
• If operating a government vehicle, has a driver’s license and valid driving license self-certification.
• Ability to quickly learn about park resources.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Exemplary people skills, including conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
• Stand or walk for long periods of time, indoors and outdoors (in mountain weather)
• Answer common questions, repeatedly.
• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds (backpacks, interpretive props, bundles of publications, etc.)
• Drive GOVs on busy park roads and in crowded parking lots.
• Handle situations where visitors may be unfamiliar with rules and regulations, and could potentially be upset.
Safety Considerations:
• Walking and hiking should align with the volunteer’s skills and abilities.
• Volunteer wears uniform items and layers suited to the elements.
• Volunteer follows all safety protocols for driving, roving, wildlife jam management, etc.
• Volunteer initiates backcountry tracking with Dispatch via radio or cell phone anytime they travel more than ¼ mile past a trailhead.

Education: volunteer should have a bachelor’s degree in a related field or at least one year of relevant experience to qualify for the position.
Lodging Needs: Grand Teton National Park provides RV sites / Volunteer must provide their own RV.
