JOB DESCRIPTION:
The BLM Socorro Field Office is looking for Campground Hosts at the Datil Well Recreation Area. The opportunity will be for the 2026 Summer/Fall season!
Details, Location and Duties
A RV site is provided free of charge for hosts. The modern RV site has complete utility hookups (50 amp, 30amp, 110 volt, WIFI, sewer and water), and picnic table. Volunteer hosts must own their own accommodation (RV/Camper/Motorhome) to live on site; tents are not permitted. When applying to this position please provide at least 3 professional references (e.g., supervisors, coworkers, business contacts, others who know your work ethics and skills).
Located 37 miles West from the Village of Magdalena, Datil Well campground is situated in a pinyon/juniper woodland forest, it is a very popular historic recreation site in central New Mexico. Numerous visitors come each year to explore and visit the historic site and experience the unique area as Datil Well was once located along the old Magdalena livestock driveway.
Datil Well Campground has a small visitor center that acts as a point of contact and information for the BLM. The visitor center is open Thursday-Monday (closed Christmas and Easter) and is primarily staffed by the Site Hosts. On average, the visitor center receives from 10-20 visitors per day but can see as many as 50-60 visitors during busy weekends.
The primary duties are to greet visitors and perform fee requirements and compliance. Hosts are often the first and only contact so they should be friendly, personal and neat. Some light maintenance and general housekeeping such, monitor and campsites, cleaning the vault toilets, fire ring cleaning and restocking vault toilets when needed. Occasionally, the group site will be rented for events and gatherings. The host will need to be available to unlock the gate. A UTV will be available for use to perform daily duties. Hosts are expected to be professional and provide a polite image to the public and other BLM staff.
Site hosts is expected to be devoted to the campground and be available 5 days per week with 2 days off. Supervision will be by a BLM Recreation Specialist. A valid state driver’s license is required. Site hosts will need to complete defensive driving and collection officer training, both of which will be provided by the BLM before going on duty. Background checks may be required.
There is limited cell phone coverage, depending on cell provider with Wi-Fi on site. Grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations and other amenities are in Socorro, New Mexico or Springerville, Arizona. To avoid any possible conflicts with pets and humans, Pets are NOT permitted, as the forest surrounding the campground has a healthy populations of Javelinas, Coyotes and Bobcats that occasionally visit the facilities.
Expect hot summers with average temperatures in the high 90s and occasional thunderstorms. In the spring, high winds of 60 mph or above are common. Winter temperatures range from lows in the 30s to highs in the 60s.
