ADDRESS: 33100 Tamiami Trail East Ochopee, Florida, 34141
DATES: 10/6/2025 – 4/10/2026
DEPT: National Park Service
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Volunteers for this position are needed for the whole season, from October 6th to April 10th, 2026.
- Join our team assisting with our 6th grade curriculum-based environmental education program in South Florida. Environmental Education Assistants hike into a cypress strand, prairie and pinelands with the students and help them with field experiments, data gathering, and other activities such as radio telemetry, dip netting and water quality testing. While the hiking is not long in distance it can be physically demanding as it involves long periods of standing, walking through knee to thigh deep water, heat and humidity, mosquitoes, uneven footing and other swamp creatures besides the 6th graders! Volunteers work with the education team on a variety of duties including restocking and maintaining equipment and backpacks, and general housekeeping of education center.
- Volunteers also assist Rangers with community outreach at festivals and special events in the local area, workshops, wet walks, canoe trips, and bike rides. They also work on special projects and have a number of job-related exploration and training opportunities throughout the season.
- Volunteers are asked to contribute a minimum of 32-hours per week each and in return are provided with an RV site which includes full hookups at an assigned location during their working stay at Big Cypress National Preserve. Volunteers must have their own personal vehicle besides RV. RVs must be fully contained. Laundry facilities, a pool and a weight room are available. Volunteers may invite one set of guests to spend up to three nights on your site – they will have electric hook-ups only.
- Volunteer will be issued uniform shirts, a jacket, and a hat. They must supply khaki or dark brown pants, socks, and closed-toed shoes. While on duty, the volunteer must wear the required uniform. Uniform items are not to be worn off-duty.
- Volunteers will work under the guidance of Lisa Andrews, Outreach/Education Coordinator.
