JOB DESCRIPTION:

Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument (SAPU) is looking for Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP) to join the park’s Facilities/Maintenance Division! We are an innovative and fast-paced park looking for passionate VIPs to join our team to help us and work alongside our dynamic team!

 

Support our Facilities/Maintenance team by completing and supporting work tasks at each of our 3 park units and 4 visitor centers at SAPU. Each of our park units at Salinas Pueblo Missions are all located within 25 miles of the Town of Mountainair, NM. As a Volunteer-in-Parks (VIP), you will professionally represent the National Park Service by,

 

Opening and closing park unit gates, when assigned.
Conveying Park safety information and health hazards to the public.
Completing work tasks independently as assigned by Facilities Manager, or alongside maintenance staff.
Safe operation and handling of chemicals/cleaners, hand tools, power tools, NPS vehicles, heavy machinery and/or operation of large vehicles or trailers requiring a CDL, all following established NPS/Park Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), trainings and policies.

Work Tasks may include all or some of the following:

 

Custodial/Laborer

Completing standard routes, cleaning, removing waste, stocking of disposable materials within park unit bathrooms, transporting and carrying necessary materials.

Carpentry

Repairing buildings, installing or replacing doors, shelves, racks, windows, trimming, cabinets, siding, steps, thresholds, and glass.
Repairing damaged concrete or wooden walks and steps using hand and power tools.

Painting

Apply paints and stains to interior/exterior masonry, wood, metal, trim, cabinets, and fixtures.
Paint equipment such as garbage cans, racks, picnic tables, and signposts using brushes, rollers, and sprayers.
Assist with prep work, mixing/stirring paint, moving materials, cleaning tools and equipment.

Plumbing

Replace hose bibs, valves, fittings, fixtures, toilets, faucets, and various pipe types.
Cut and thread pipe, winterize water systems, and use common plumbing tools and materials.

Roofing

Patch and repair tar-and-paper, metal, foam, and shingle roofs, preserving historic appearance when required.
Remove and rebuild roofing sections to restore drainage and leak prevention using standard roofing tools.

Electrical

Repair by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating basic wiring and fixtures using standard electrical hand tools.
Work does not require advanced cuts or angles and is checked during and after completion.

Cement Finishing

Build and set simple straight-line forms for sidewalks and steps.
Mix, pour, spread, and level concrete; remove broken sections and prepare sub surfaces for repair.
Perform basic finishing and simple curved forms under guidance; work is checked during and after completion.

Masonry

Perform basic maintenance, repair, and stabilization of stone, mortar, or adobe historic structures and modern features.
Mix mortar/adobe materials, remove damaged wall sections, record work details, and use common masonry tools.
Advanced techniques such as specialized joint finishing or air-hammer use are generally not required.

As a SAPU Volunteer, you will be able to,

 

Access our library and learn about our park’s history for your own interest.
Contribute to our NPS SAPU photo library.
Participate in All Employee Meetings and trainings and contribute ideas, opinions, and suggestions.
Have access to the park’s gym.
Attend volunteer field trips to areas of interest around NM.
Connect with our network of previous Volunteers-in-Parks.

Volunteer lodging/housing is AVAILABLE and consists of two (2) RV Pads. Volunteers who utilize park housing opportunities are required to meet a minimum of 32 hours worked per week. Mileage reimbursement is offered for volunteers traveling between our sites for this opportunity.
