JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Site Host serves as the liaison between public visitors in the Fairbank Historic Townsite in the San Pedro Riparian national Conservation Area (SPRNCA) and the Bureau of Land Management, and as the day-to-day ground’s caretaker.

 

A. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Meet, greet, and inform visitors:

  • Answer questions visitors may ask about the site and SPRNCA generally.
  • Explain the regulations which apply to the SPRNCA (see Supplementary Rules).
  • Hand out maps or other informational materials (trail maps, SPRNCA rules and regulations, site flyers, etc.)

2. Grounds and facility maintenance/operation:

  • Open the gates (Fairbank Townsite and Boquillas Trailhead) at sunrise.
  • Close the gates at sundown.
  • Perform light maintenance work around the grounds, trails and paths.
  • Litter pickup, disposal in dumpster.
  • Check bathrooms daily; restock toilet paper and sweep between contractor visits if needed.
  • Maintain the picnic sites; rake the ground, clean out fireplaces, and wash tables.
  • Cut or remove weeds using hand tools.
  • Sweep concrete walks/slabs.
  • Trim overhanging branches along paths or trail (only within clearing limits) with hand tools (no chainsaw work)
  • Restock flyer or hand out dispensers.
  • NO WORK IS TO BE DONE ON ANY HISTORIC BUILDINGS OR STRUCTURES, INSIDE OR OUT.

3. Monitor recreational use and site conditions.

  • Be observant of public visitors and what they are doing,
  • Based on a reading of the situation or circumstances, offer assistance or gather information for reporting.
  • The site host is not a law enforcement position; do not attempt to confront, detain, discipline, or threaten any visitors in apparent violation.
  • The Site Host will only document and report incidents of apparent violation to appropriate BLM staff.
  • LAW ENFORCEMENT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT RANGERS ONLY.
  • Check condition of the grounds, paths and trails, and recreation facilities.

4. Reports:

  • Write down complaints and criticism from site visitors about the site and/or facilities.
  • Report conditions that could affect the health and safety of visitors.
  • Report any maintenance items which need immediate attention.
  • May maintain other written records as requested by the BLM Park Ranger

B. Working Conditions:

  • Work is mostly outside on the grounds at the Fairbank Historic Townsite, and connected trails to the San Pedro River, and the Fairbank Loop.
  • Summers are hot and cloudy at times, with summer storms typically from June to September.
  • Winters are cold, dry, and mostly clear, with winter rains from October to April.
  • Walking or bicycling is required to check the grounds and trails.
  • Must stay on-site at designated Site Host camp unit.
  • Must adhere to all SPRNCA rules and regulations.

C. Site Host Furnished Items:

  • RV or travel trailer for staying on site.
  • All transportation, camping and personal equipment.
  • All food and personal supplies.
  • Personal telephone.

D. Bureau of Land Management Furnished Items:

  • Use of a space to set up an RV or travel trailer.
  • Water hook up from the on-site water system.
  • Electric hookup from existing panel. In case of power outage, the site host is responsible for the secondary form of power.
  • Propane tank refills during the Site Host stay. Refills are the responsibility of the site host and
  • BLM pays invoices.
  • Septic tank hook up.
  • Key to site access gates (requires a DI-105).
  • Key to Fairbank bathroom toilet paper holder (or combination for lock).
  • Extra toilet paper (for use by the site host, and for re-stocking the public toilet if the paper is used up before the unit is serviced by the Contractor).
  • Grounds maintenance tools: rake, shovel, pruning saw, pruning loppers, leather gloves, safety goggles, broom.
  • Official BLM Volunteer hat or vest.

 

E. Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required:

  • Ability to interact with the general public and provide basic customer service and get along well with people.
  • Ability to remain calm and friendly when interacting with upset visitors.
  • Physically able to move about to check the grounds, paths and trails, parking areas.
  • Familiar with the SPRNCA rules, access points/trailheads, visitor contact stations.
  • Familiar with local points of interest and the location of traveler services that may be of interest to visitors (commercial campgrounds, septic tank dump stations, groceries, churches, local attractions, local events, medical facilities/hospitals.

F. Time Commitment:

  • Site host positions may be up to six (6) months.
  • The site host position requires a minimum three (3) month commitment.
  • The site host must be on –duty during weekend days and holidays, when peaks in public visitation may occur.
  • Normally on duty 25 hours per week, including most weekends and all holidays.
  • Normally on duty five (5 hours) a day, including morning gate opening and evening gate closing time.
  • Personal time off: Two consecutive days off per week in the winter-spring (typically high public use season); three (3) consecutive days off in the summer (typically low public use season).

G. Supervision:

  • The Site Host is supervised by the SPRNCA Park Ranger, as designated by the Field Manager.
  • If the SPRNCA Park Ranger is on annual leave, sick leave, or assigned off-site, the Outdoor Recreation Planner from the Tucson Field Office will be your temporary supervisor.

H. Training Provided by the BLM:

  • Training and orientation may be provided through personal briefings, reading materials, or formal training courses.
  • Site Host responsibilities, duties.
  • Things to see and do in the SPRNCA.
  • SPRNCA rules and regulations.
  • SPRNCA resource values.
  • First Aid and CPR may be offered to agency employees. If a training course is planned, the opportunity to take the course may be available for the Site Host.
