ADDRESS: 1428 Highway 27 Bell City, Louisiana, 70630
DATES: 10/1/2025 – 6/30/2026
DEPT: Fish & Wildlife Service
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Dates:
We are looking for volunteers who are available for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months, beginning October 2025. Exact start and end dates are flexible. Both individuals and couples are welcome to apply. Volunteers arriving as individuals can expect to work 30 hours per week, while volunteers arriving as couples can expect to work 24 hours per week, per person, in exchange for an RV site with full hookup. Both the days of the week and hours can be adjusted to accommodate your availability. There is cell coverage with good signal strength depending on the service carrier, but no internet service—most volunteers use their personal hotspots. Volunteers may work independently or as part of a team of refuge volunteers and staff.
Position Description:
We are seeking enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to serve in and around the visitor center to help ensure that our visitors have a memorable and safe experience while enjoying all the refuge has to offer. Duties for this position include providing orientation and information to visitors; taking reservations for programs and tours; operating audio/visual equipment; performing opening/closing duties at the center; performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the visitor use areas, performing grounds maintenance and trail work; ensuring the refuge is free of litter; weeding & small tree trimming, administrative work, and assisting the refuge with special projects and events. Individual projects or opportunities to assist with biology work may be available based on the volunteer’s interests and refuge needs.
Requirements:
Ensuring a clean and well-maintained site for the public is of the utmost importance. Strong customer service skills and some public speaking ability is required. All volunteers must have the ability to communicate with a wide variety of visitors while maintaining a positive attitude, show enthusiasm for serving the public, and express a desire to learn about and explore the refuge. While natural history knowledge is helpful, it is not required. One of the most important qualifications a volunteer can have is flexibility, as we have a small staff with a LOT of work to do, so priorities and work assignments can change quickly. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license. On-site orientation, training, and a uniform (volunteer shirts) will be provided and required to wear while on-duty.
Refuge housing is not available. Volunteers must be able to provide their own lodging (RV, travel trailer, 5th wheel). When applying, please provide contact information for three references. If applying as a couple, please provide an application for both individuals.
** Please indicate on your application which months you are available to volunteer.
About the Refuge:
Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge is located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, with its headquarters in Bell City. It also serves as the administrative headquarters for the Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The refuge is situated approximately 30 minutes south of Lake Charles and about 2.5 hours west of Baton Rouge, in the heart of Louisiana’s rich coastal marshlands.
Covering over 9,600 acres, the refuge features a diverse landscape of fresh and brackish marshes, coastal prairie, and managed impoundments that provide critical habitat for migratory birds. Uniquely positioned at the intersection of the Mississippi and Central Flyways, Cameron Prairie plays a key role in supporting millions of migratory birds that travel through the region each year. Each winter, tens of thousands of ducks, geese, and other birds arrive at the refuge, making it a prime destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
