Job Description

The volunteer opportunity includes working in the ranger station, roving and visitor center help. Are you flexible and willing to work in a variety of areas of park operations throughout each week, then this opportunity is for you. Most visitors share a few common simple needs: a clean, quiet and friendly place where they can relax and enjoy the great outdoors. RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

Shifts: Greet park visitors and campers in a friendly and professional Florida Park Service image. Ability to courteously inform park visitors about park regulations or safety regulations. Ability to read and understand park maps in order to orient park visitors. Help facilitate and inform guests on special events and park programs. Demonstrate proper use of a park radio.
Ranger Station Duties: Collect day-use entrance fees via point of sale system. Provide park information via the phone and in person. Register people for the wilderness preserve.
Restock park information in the ranger station and visitor center. Clean ranger station, visitor center or gift shop during slower periods of the day (dusting, sweeping)

Roving: Rove along the main drive, interpreting park rules and information, answering questions, giving directions etc. to park visitors. Must be willing to be stationed at the bridge or other high traffic areas for much of the roving shift when needed, to interpret park rules and answer visitor questions.
Visitor Center & Roving: Track visitor contacts via clicker counter and record on clipboard in volunteer office.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Ranger station positions can be strenuous at times, requiring the ability to stand on tile surface for several hours in duration, maintain focus through many distractions as well as bend, stoop and twist to clean or pick up materials, etc.
Ability to work a cash register efficiently and complete daily financial reports
Several hours of work each day will expose hosts to high heat & humidity during the summer months.
The ability to work well with others, display a good attitude and be flexible is a must.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to take initiative and exercise judgment as situations require.
Good people skills-courteous and professional manners on the radio, phone and in person
A neat and professional appearance
Ability and desire to acquire park knowledge necessary to answer visitors’ questions

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:

This position is available for the months of June through November 2026.
A minimum of 2 months and maximum of 4 months is required.
Team members work 4 days a week, 6 hour shifts, with 3 days off..
Schedule can include weekends, evenings and holidays.
A minimum of 24 hours per week per campsite is required for park residency.
There are usually three ranger station shifts, one visitor center shift and one roving shift per day.
Schedules can vary and overlap to suit individual/park needs or workload.

TRAINING/PRE-REQUISITS:

In the Volunteer Portal, have a Volunteer Application and a current Volunteer Agreement and Volunteer DEP Annual Combo Training (diversity, sexual harassment & workers’ compensation), both renewed annually. Must pass state and national sexual predator checks.
Training on shift duties and expectations will be provided by staff or experienced volunteers upon arrival and prior to beginning regular schedule.
This position requires individual login credentials and pin number to operate the cash register. A personal email address will be required to establish credentials prior to arrival.
