JOB DESCRIPTION:

The selected candidate(s) will have the opportunity to work in the new Marjory Stoneman Douglas Visitor Center greeting visitors, answering questions in-person and over the phone, assisting with trip planning, and working with Junior Rangers. The individual or couple may also deliver informal interpretation while roving the grounds and while staffing the visitor center desk, conduct formal interpretive programs, provide sweep assistance during ranger-led paddling programs and perform trail/grounds maintenance as needed. Additionally, the volunteer(s) may assist with special events throughout the season.

 

This opportunity is ideal for those who enjoy working with the public, have an interest in nature and/or history and are passionate about the outdoors. Selected candidate(s) should be able to stand/walk/hike for moderate periods of time and be willing to work outdoors in hot, humid and sunny weather. Ability to paddle a canoe or kayak across open water, swim, tread water and self-rescue in a canoe and kayak is recommended.

 

Government vehicle may occasionally be operated. A valid driver’s license is required.

 

Selected candidate(s) will work from approximately mid-November through April. Each volunteer(s) will work 32 hours a week. Daily shifts are usually eight hours long. Work schedule includes weekends and holidays with some evening work as needed. Typical hours for this position are from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM including a half-hour lunch.

 

The park will train all volunteers and provide all necessary equipment and materials to safely conduct required duties.

 

An RV/trailer pad is available for volunteer(s) willing to work 32 hours, (four days) per week. Please note, each person living in the RV must volunteer 32 hours per week.

 

Amenities include water, electrical and septic hook-ups, and free, communal laundry facilities in the employee housing area. There are currently no other housing opportunities for this position. Wi-Fi is available inside/adjacent to the visitor center. Cell phone signals can be spotty in the area.

 

Prior to the selection process, all volunteer applicants will be interviewed and will have the opportunity to speak with the volunteer supervisor. This will give applicants the opportunity to ask questions that are specific to their situation and needs.
