JOB DESCRIPTION:

Description

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking dedicated individuals or couples/2-person teams to fill Campground Volunteer positions for the 2026 season at Leech Lake Recreation Area. This park is located at the headwaters of the Mississippi River, nestled in the heart of Minnesota’s scenic Chippewa National Forest.

Volunteers will be provided with a full hookup campsite in the park in exchange for 20-30 hours of volunteer work per week. Those in this position will work May 1st–October 15th, 2026. We ask for at least two-month commitment.

Work schedules are flexible, and volunteers are expected to maintain a presence on-site when on duty. The Volunteer Coordinator will work with you to establish a work schedule and a list of duties.

About the Area & Recreation

Federal Dam, MN, is a summer haven for outdoor enthusiasts, primarily due to its direct access to Leech Lake and its location within the sprawling Chippewa National Forest. During the warmer months, fishing is paramount, with Leech Lake being a renowned spot for trophy walleye, muskie, and northern pike, and the area below the Federal Dam itself known for productive walleye fishing.

Boating, kayaking, and canoeing are popular ways to explore the vast waters of Leech Lake and the nearby Mississippi River. For those who prefer dry land, the Chippewa National Forest offers hundreds of miles of trails perfect for hiking and biking, with opportunities to see abundant wildlife.

Duties

As a Campground Volunteer, you will be a vital part of our team. Duties include:

Wear issued volunteer identification (e.g., vest/hat) while on duty.
Serve as a friendly and visible host, answering visitor questions about the park and local area.
Conduct regular checks of campsites and public areas for cleanliness and safety.
Perform light grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and clearing firepits.
Assist with basic upkeep of facilities, such as painting or minor repairs.
Inform visitors of park rules and regulations in a positive and helpful manner.
Assist with visitor check-ins and explain reservation procedures to campers.
Report any maintenance deficiencies, safety hazards, or compliance issues to the on-duty Park Ranger.
Promote water safety and assist with the Life Jacket Loaner Program.
Assist park staff with interpretive programs or special events as needed.

Work Environment

Volunteers will work both independently and alongside USACE staff. The work is primarily outdoors in a dynamic campground environment and involves frequent, positive interactions with the public.
