JOB DESCRIPTION:

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking a facilities and maintenance volunteer for Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. This volunteer position is a long-term, year round position that requires each volunteer to donate 80 hours per month (20/week) in exchange for a full hook up (water, sewer and electrical) at Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.

 

We are only accepting applications from single’s or couples who can commit to at least one year and preferably longer term. Start date is negotiable.

 

The volunteer may be asked to perform any of the following tasks:

• Remove branches from overhanging trees on trails using hand tools (not chainsaws)

• Weed whip, mow, and trim vegetation along refuge facilities including trails using approved equipment

• Maintain refuge equipment to keep it in good working condition

• Trash pick up and removal

• Clean-up limbs and debris from trails and road following storm events

• Work with refuge staff and volunteers on estuarine or forest restoration projects (ground prep, tree planting, etc.)

• Inform visitors of minor rules such as dogs off leash, mushroom/plant collecting, visitors entering closed areas and report those to refuge law enforcement officer

• Remove invasive plant species using hand tools

• Pressure wash buildings as needed

• Take photographs for refuge habitat and/or wildlife as requested

• Coordinate volunteer hours with staff and partners

 

Physical Environment:

Volunteer will work on uneven terrain and will be required to walk up/down various elevation gains. Normal daytime temperatures range between 45 to 70 degrees. Exposure to direct sun, wind, and rain, without shelter.

 

Qualifications:

• Volunteer must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.

• Volunteers must wear a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform component which can include a volunteer shirt/vest/or hat and present a positive image of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

• An ability to do strenuous, physically demanding jobs for long periods of time.

 

Wi-Fi is not provided at the RV sites but reliable cell service is available, and amenities include provided uniforms, safety gear, shared storage space, and access to laundry facilities. Pets considered.
