JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is a full-time volunteer opportunity. Housing is included in the form of a shared house or RV/trailer site within walking distance of the worksite, for an individual or couple.
Description: Full time interpretive volunteer (or couple) needed to assist with interpretation services on the west side of Mount Rainier National Park (Longmire and Paradise). The successful applicant(s) will work 32 hours per week, flexible start/end dates with preferably at least 2 months commitment, to start ASAP. Formal training, job shadowing, uniform, and associated work equipment will be provided.
Volunteer(s) will primarily work at busy information desks inside Longmire Museum and Henry M Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise providing information/interpretive services to park visitors. Other optional duties can include roving informal interpretation and facilitating (limited) interpretive programs. Training provided.

Successful completion of a federal investigative background check is required.
Major duties:
Makes the safety of employees and visitors the priority in the completion of duties.
- Opens, closes, and operates visitor centers and information stations, advising visitors about park facilities and resources, taking lost and found reports, answering phones and email inquiries. May sell DYNW materials, and handle donation money with supervision. May be responsible for staffing permit stations for wilderness use and is responsible for educating visitors about the requirements of wilderness hiking and camping, regulations, and safety. (50%)
- Learns about park resources by attending training provided by the park staff and reading park research materials and maps. Uses information from the library, sharepoint and digital file folders, or provided by the supervisor to prepare informal interpretive activities. (10%)
- Provides roving interpretation on the trails by foot, sharing information with visitors and educating visitors on park regulations to protect resources. (20%)
- Prepare and present formal and informal program/s, experiences, and products such as orientation talks, kids’ programs, conducted walk, social media content, and curriculum education programs. Programs are based on park resources and developed themes and meet standards for NPS interpretation. Quantity and type of programs will be based on the volunteer’s experience, skills, and program operational needs. Training will be provided as well as shadow opportunities before independently conducting programs. (20%)
- May drive a government vehicle during the performance of duties listed above.
