JOB DESCRIPTION:

The primary goal of this position is to assist law enforcement staff with the operations of the Off-Road Vehicle Office.

A Tier II Background Check is REQUIRED.

 

Description of Duties:

  • Open and close the off-road vehicle (ORV) office in line with the standard operating procedures
  • Work with visitors to the ORV office to ensure that they have the proper paperwork for their vehicles
  • Conduct physical inspections on the ORVs and make sure that they meet all NPS requirements
  • Process payment for ORV permit using a digital card-reading system and hand out permit sticker
  • Answer questions in-person and over the phone
  • Explain to visitors the rules of the backcountry ORV trails and help them to understand the importance of these rules

Qualifications

  • Have excellent teamwork skills.
  • Be able to communicate with visitors, supervisors and fellow volunteers and park staff effectively.
  • Be able to take direction as well as exercise good judgment while adhering to preserve regulations and safety standards.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Be able to stand or walk for extended time, bend and kneel and may occur on rough, or slippery terrain.

Working Environment and Safety Considerations:

Temperatures can range from 50 to over 100 degrees. Humidity can make the “feels like”

temperature exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Volunteers in this position will mostly be working inside of an air-conditioned building but will have to complete vehicle inspections outside in all weather. While working outside, the volunteer will be subject to direct sunlight, and potential exposure to bugs that bite or stings. Danger exists

due to possible cuts, scrapes, bruises, and burns.

 

Time Commitment:

Local volunteers not requiring an RV pad: Minimum 8 hours per week.

Volunteers requiring an RV pad: Minimum of 32 hours per week.

RVs must be fully self-contained, and RV pads include full hookups. Volunteers will have access to a laundry facility and pool at the headquarters building. RV pads are located at Dona Driver.
