JOB DESCRIPTION:

Recreation volunteers work a 4 days on, 3 days off schedule, allowing them time to rest, and explore the beauty and adventures that Montana has to offer. Recreation volunteers will be based out of Fort Benton, MT, but volunteer duties could include driving a government vehicle throughout the monument.

 

The recreation volunteer is responsible for assisting with various recreation duties in the monument including vehicles shuttles, recreation site maintenance, providing visitor information, resource monitoring and more! Recreation volunteers can expect to disseminate information regarding paddling the river, explaining rules and regulations, ensuring visitors have all required equipment, posting weather forecasts and river flows, etc.

 

Driving duties could include driving for multiple hours at a time when assisting with vehicle shuttles, backcountry road or wilderness study area monitoring.

 

Duties:

Volunteer duties include but are not limited to:

-Providing vehicle shuttles for river patrol staff

-Providing visitor information at the Missouri Breaks Interpretive Center front desk or other monument locations regarding recreational opportunities, rules and regulation

-Completing maintenance activities at Missouri Breaks Interp Interpretive Center*

-Completing maintenance activities as needed at other recreation sites*

-Monitoring facilities, campgrounds, backcountry roads and wilderness study areas for visitor security and potential safety hazards

-Reporting to staff when repairs are needed or when incidents occur

 

*Maintenance duties could include routine bathroom cleaning, campsite cleanup (trash pick-up, fire ring cleaning), grass mowing and other basic maintenance tasks. All tools needed are provided by the BLM.

 

Location Info:

The volunteer would be based out of Canoe Camp within the town of Fort Benton. Fort Benton has a small grocery store, hospital services, and restaurants. Fort Benton is a 45 minute drive from Great Falls who offers multiple grocery stores, hospitals, entertainment, multiple restaurants and airport services.

 

Schedule:

-4 Days On, 3 Days Off

 

Volunteer Campsite Amenities:

-Campground Hosts must provide their own trailer or RV for housing.

-Electric & Water Hookups Provided

-Septic Dump

-Cell Phone Service

 

The BLM will reimburse each volunteer $38 for each full day duty shift worked.
