JOB DESCRIPTION:

Duties: Volunteers will provide support to maintenance staff with an emphasis on grounds keeping and landscaping of public use areas. Duties include mowing or brush cutting with a riding lawn mower, weed whip, or loppers in the following areas: public lake accesses, hiking trails, interpretive sites, and entrance areas. May also clear brush around service trails, trail entrances and refuge signs. Other duties may include trail maintenance, painting, gardening, carpentry projects, sign installation and trash pick-up. May be responsible for cleaning one public restroom weekly. Opportunities to assist in biology and visitor services/education will be available if interested.

Qualifications: Interests, skill and background in working on maintenance projects (grounds keeping and mechanics) are desired. Volunteers will tow a trailer and load and unload riding lawn mower onto and off the trailer frequently. Trailer loading and backing training will be provided (trailering experience is desired). Must be physically able to operate a riding lawn mower, push mower, carry and operate a weed whip. Will work in warm temperatures among biting insects. Must commit to a minimum of 3 months. Minimum of 24 hrs of work/week/volunteer in exchange for RV pad.

 

Tamarac consists of 43,000 acres of mixed forests, rivers and lakes. Wildlife abounds with trumpeter swans, wolves, bear, deer and numerous migratory songbirds. Summer temps range from the 70s to 80s and may reach 90. Some days can be humid. There are mosquitoes, biting flies and ticks. Personal protective equipment will be provided and safety will be covered. Most work will be conducted outdoors.
