JOB DESCRIPTION:

Olympic National Forest is seeking a volunteer host at Seal Rock Campground for the 2025 season!

This popular campground with its beautiful views of Hood Canal and the mountains to the southeast is located directly on Hood Canal. Seal Rock Campground is one of the few national forest campgrounds located on salt water with harvestable oysters for public use.

 

Duties:  

  • Greeting visitors with a friendly and helpful attitude; providing appropriate Forest information.
  • Assisting with campsite registration as needed and encourage fee compliance.
  • Cleaning and resupplying restroom facilities daily, includes replacing toilet paper, sweeping/mopping restroom floors, cleaning bathroom toilets.
  • Picking up litter within the campground.
  • Other duties performed as needed includes removing cobwebs and hornet nests from buildings, cleaning campfire pits and grills, extinguishing unattended campfires, and trimming brush along trails.
  • Physical duties include walking the campground, standing for long periods of time, and carry supplies (up to 20 lbs.)
  • Hosts do not enforce forest rules and regulations or collect any fees but do encourage visitors to recreate responsibly.
  • Reporting any issues or concerns to the Recreation Manager and Staff.
  • Positively representing the Olympic National Forest.

 

Position Details & Expectations:

The camp host site has water, electric, sewer, and a holding tank for gray water. Hosts will remain on site 5 days per week, Thursday through Monday, and be available to answer visitor questions within reasonable hours, usually 9am-7pm. A stipend will be given at $35/day worked. Propane costs will not be reimbursed. A Forest Service volunteer name tag, badge and vest will be issued upon arrival and returned at the end of the season. Start and end dates may be negotiable.

 

Campground Description:

Seal Rock Campground is located near Quilcene, Washington directly on the Hood Canal, adjacent to Highway 101. It is one of the few national forest campgrounds located on salt water with harvestable oysters for public use. There are 41 tent/RV sites spaced among the trees with several along the waterfront. It offers fresh piped water, flush toilets, electricity in the restrooms and tables and fire pits at each site. Garbage cans are spaced throughout campground. There is also a day use area within the campground that offers two accessible interpretive trails. All sites are first-come, first-served.

 

Area Description:

The area is generally mild in temperature and may be cold or rainy during the early summer, and the weather warms up over the season. Nearby attractions include Dosewallips State Park and the Dosewallips Recreation Area, and numerous hiking trailheads that lead into the Olympic mountains. The campground is just 12 miles south of Quilcene, WA and ~2 miles north of Brinnon, WA. Both towns offer a few dining options, a general store, and gas.
