ADDRESS: 3714 Highway 16 Marion, Virginia, 24354
DATES: 4/1/2026 – 11/30/2026
DEPT: Forest Service
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Stony Fork Campground, tucked in a natural forest setting, is located at the foot of Big Walker Mountain beside the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway. The east fork of Stony Fork Creek winds through the campground, providing a serene setting for trout fishing and water play for volunteers and visitors alike. Stony Fork sits in a valley of the Appalachians at a 2,400-foot elevation. Its creekside setting provides a peaceful soundtrack of running water.
This 51-site campground offers peaceful setting for those looking to relax and/or looking for outdoor adventure. Visit recreation.gov for photos and maps.
Stony Fork Campground is a perfect choice for a volunteer who wants a beautiful mountain setting while also enjoying the convenience of cell phone coverage and a full-service town, Wytheville, nearby. Stony Fork is a very popular campground that is only 4 miles from Interstate 77 and adjacent to a paved state road. Located at the base of Big Walker Mountain. The Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway is an incredible drive for viewing blooms of rhododendron, azalea and mountain laurel in spring, and fiery red and gold foliage in fall. Scenic overlooks highlight views of Mount Rogers and many ridges and valleys. A horseshoe pit at the campground provides hours of fun for families. Experienced hikers love the Seven Sisters Trail, approximately 5 miles, which leads from the campground to the top of Little Walker Mountain, then onto the Scenic Byway. The 1-mile Stony Fork Nature Trail takes campers through groves of pine and hardwoods, and the campground loop road makes for a scenic walk, too.
Volunteers are provided with a campsite with water, electricity, and sewer hook-ups. Laundry facilities are available on site for volunteers at the cabin when it is not occupied. Campsites are available for volunteers from April through November. In exchange for the free campsite and utilities, we ask our volunteers to help at least four hours per day, five days per week per person. Due to weekends being our busiest time, we will schedule “days off” for less busy weekdays. Sometimes needs change within the recreation area, and you may be asked to assist with other volunteer responsibilities other than what you initially “signed up” for. Just let me know what type of position suits your interests and when you would be interested in volunteering (specific dates). To assist with scheduling and site availability, we request that our volunteers stay at least 4 weeks, typically arriving at the first of the month and leaving at the end of the month.
Host(s) will represent the Forest Service in public contacts, providing information and directions, and reporting vandalism and other problems to Forest Service personnel. A golf cart, all necessary tools, cleaning supplies, and safety equipment, will be provided by the Forest Service. Campground Host training and orientation will also be provided by the Forest Service.
