JOB DESCRIPTION:

The BLM, Roswell Field Office, is looking to add one volunteer position for the Valley of Fires Recreation Area. Individuals will reside on site and work 3-5 days a week and are needed year-round in three to six month terms. The primary responsibilities will be staffing the visitor center desk and sales area and providing assistance to the public; disseminating information in person or by telephone, sales and inventory and secondly of assisting the camp host with daily duties or filling in for the camp host on the camp host’s days off. The position may offer a reimbursement of $22/Day.

 

A camp site with water and electrical hookups will be provided. There is a dump station, vault toilets, and a shower house on site to be utilized as well.

 

 The main duties will be to engage with and educate visitors and ensure that they have a safe enjoyable time at the recreation area and assist them with questions or needs they may have. The volunteer has daily contacts with the visiting public, other volunteers, BLM staff, and researchers. Visitors are of all ages and from all social, ethnic and economic groups. The volunteer has contact with park visitors for the purpose of providing information about area facilities, services, activities and recreational opportunities. The volunteer may provide talks to visiting groups. Public contacts occasionally include handling visitor complaints and conflicts, although these are referred to the supervisor.

 

Volunteer may occasionally assist camp host and BLM staff with cleaning of the facilities/grounds maintenance.

 

Position is expected to be devoted to the Recreation Area and be available during daytime, weekend and holiday hours as needed by recreation area users. Volunteer must also be self-sufficient and have reliable personal vehicle to use for grocery runs and any other personal needs. The volunteer must keep a clean and orderly site at all times.

 

Pets are only permitted if approved by BLM Supervisor PRIOR to accepting the position. Pets must be leashed at all times.

Acting as a Campground Host, the volunteer will routinely operate a UTV or golf cart in the campground and occasionally may operate BLM vehicle or small equipment. Hosts will be expected to go through defensive driving class and background checks.

 

Additional interpretive/educational and sales training will be available and provided through our partner, the Public Land Interpretive Association.

 

The volunteer is required to perform all duties while presenting a professional and polite image to the public and other BLM staff.
