JOB DESCRIPTION:
*BIRD WATCHING SEASON* and *WATERFOWL HUNTING SEASON*:
Seeking a friendly person to greet visitors, answer questions, assist with purchasing the entrance pass online, raise and lower flags on a flagpole, restock brochures, and keep a small visitor center organized and stocked during the fall and winter seasons. The volunteer would also clean the visitor center (sweep, mop, dust, vacuum, water plants, empty trash, clean bird droppings from kiosk, etc.) and tidy the restrooms as needed. There may be opportunities to assist with special events. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Other volunteer opportunities include basic groundskeeping (mowing, weed trimming, leaf blowing), maintenance shop tool organization, sign cleaning, brochure stocking, traffic counter collecting, driving, small engine repair, helping with the cleaning of the visitor center and observation decks, and assisting refuge staff with miscellaneous tasks. A vehicle is available for use by this volunteer upon completion of required training.
Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is located along I-5 about 70 miles north of Sacramento and about 80 miles south of Redding, California. It is well known for the millions of geese and ducks which migrate through and spend weeks to months in the refuge’s wetlands. The refuge complex includes public recreation activities at Sacramento, Delevan, Colusa, Sutter, and Sacramento River NWRs, and the Llano Seco Unit (in STNCV Wildlife Management Area). The visitor center is located 10 miles south of the city of Willows, California, which has grocery stores and restaurants.
All resident volunteers must meet the qualifications and work the minimum weekly work hours (20) to stay in housing or RV. Send email to inquire.
HOUSING:
RV pads with electric and water hookups are available with a minimum six week commitment of 20 hours per week per resident. Trash service and gray water pump service is provided. Tent camping is not allowed, nor are open fires. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. NOTE: The RV spaces are located within an active maintenance compound with heavy equipment and work vehicles operating nearby throughout the week days.
