DESCRIPTION:

This is a volunteer position under the supervision of the VIP Coordinator or delegated to a park guide/ranger for the Division of Interpretation. The volunteer’s primary duty station is at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center. The volunteer’s primary duties include providing Park information to visitors, leading cave tours and fees handling. Government Housing is available.

 

 

Volunteer Visitor Information and Cave Tour Leader

 

This is a volunteer position under the supervision of the VIP Coordinator or delegated to a park guide/ranger for the Division of Interpretation. The volunteer’s primary duty station is at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center. The volunteer’s primary duties include providing Park information to visitors, leading cave tours and fees handling.

 

A volunteer uniform shirt will be provided to the volunteer and must be worn with clean brown jeans or brown slacks. Volunteers must be able to work assigned hours and provide/arrange their own transportation to the workplace.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

Under direct supervision of an interpretive park ranger, the volunteer will lead cave tour groups, assuring a safe and interpretive tour.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting rangers at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center Front Desk,
  • Running audio visual programs for visitors,
  • Clerical responsibilities deemed necessary,
  • Federal Fee Collection duties, including sales of Cave Tour Tickets, remits and counting fees.

 

The volunteer will also:

  • Strive to use methods and language to meet the needs and understanding of the park visitor.
  • Research and provide accurate information about the park and surrounding area.
  • Encourage compliance with park regulations through understanding.
  • Learn and consistently follow all safety practices applicable to job and surroundings in which work is performed. When appropriate, submits constructive suggestions to reduce or eliminate safety hazards to employees and visitors.

The volunteer will contribute to the effective operations of Great Basin National Park’s interpretive program. The volunteer’s contact with the public will enhance the quality of an interpretive program and may influence the park visitor’s opinion, attitude, and enjoyment of the park.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position requires standing, walking over rough, uneven surfaces and spending a period of time in the cave’s cool, damp environment.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • In the cave environment, the incumbent will be subjected to constant temperatures near 50 degrees F. with relative humidity above 90 percent.
  • Lehman Caves Visitor Center is located at an elevation of approximately 6,825 feet.

 

Training and reference material will be provided to the volunteer cave guide. After the initial training period, plus a reasonable time of performing the assigned duties, the volunteer guide will be reviewed and evaluated by their trainer.

 

DUTIES

Lead 1-hour cave tours for groups of 20 or less. Be able to navigate narrow passages by ducking or walking sideways in some places. Climb 76 steps dispersed along the trail. Research, prepare and deliver a safe and thematic interpretive cave tour.

 

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting rangers dispense Park information to visitors at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center Front Desk,
  • Running audio visual programs for visitors,
  • Clerical responsibilities deemed necessary,
  • Federal Fee Collection duties, including, Cave Tour Tickets, remits and counting fees. Also, sales of gift shop.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:

  • Research and be able to describe cave formations, cave processes, and general geology of the area.
  • Understand the National Park Service Mission (Organic Act) and know the basic history of the NPS.
  • Understand the Great Basin National Park mission, along with the basic history of Great Basin National Park.
  • Understand basic management policies of Great Basin National Park and the National Park Service
  • Enjoy research and have enthusiasm for learning
