JOB DESCRIPTION:
Olympic National Forest is seeking a volunteer host at Willaby Campground for the 2026 season!
The Olympic National Forest is seeking a volunteer campground host at Willaby Campground on the shores of tranquil Lake Quinault. Duties include meeting and greeting campers, maintaining campground facilities, and answering visitor questions. Campground hosts will greet visitors with a welcoming, friendly, and service-oriented attitude.
Duties:
- Greeting visitors with a friendly and helpful attitude; providing appropriate Forest information.
- Assisting with campsite registration as needed and encourage fee compliance.
- Cleaning and resupplying restroom facilities daily, includes replacing toilet paper, sweeping/mopping restroom floors, cleaning bathroom toilets.
- Picking up litter within the campground.
- Other duties performed as needed includes removing cobwebs and hornet nests from buildings, cleaning campfire pits and grills, extinguishing unattended campfires, and trimming brush along trails.
- Physical duties include walking the campground, standing for long periods of time, and carry supplies (up to 20 lbs.)
- Hosts do not enforce forest rules and regulations or collect any fees but do encourage visitors to recreate responsibly.
- Reporting any issues or concerns to the Recreation Manager and Staff.
- Positively representing the Olympic National Forest.
Position Details & Expectations:
Hosts will be provided a campsite with electrical hookups. There is a water spigot across from the site, but no way to attach a hose. There are no sewer hookups. The site is ideally outfitted for someone with a vehicle under 20′, such as a converted van or small trailer. Hosts will have access to a Forest Service wellness building with showers and flushable toilets.
Hosts are expected to remain on site 5 days per week, Thursday through Monday, and be available to answer visitor questions within reasonable hours, usually 9am-7pm, with flexibility for a mid-day break. A stipend will be given at $35/day worked. Propane costs will not be reimbursed. A Forest Service volunteer name tag, badge and vest will be issued upon arrival and returned at the end of the season. Start and end dates may be negotiable. Dogs are welcome!
Campground Description:
Willaby Campground is located near Quinault, Washington. There are 21 campsites that can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs up to 16 feet in length, however no hook ups are provided. Most campsites can only accommodate 1 vehicle, no other parking within campground. Some sites are in wooded areas and others are not; many of the sites have a view of the lake. The campground has a potable water system. The site also has a barrier-free flush toilet as well as several accessible camp and picnic sites. Willaby campground also contains a boat launch area with 3 day use sites. The Lake belongs to the Quinault Indian Nation and boat inspections must be completed by them before entering with your watercraft. Please keep boats clean, drained and dry, to avoid transport or introduction of aquatic invasive species.
Area Description:
The Lake Quinault area is a popular destination for visitors during the summer months, and the boat launch at Willaby Campground brings in many locals as well. The area is generally mild in temperature and may be cold or rainy during the early summer, with the weather warming up over the season. Nearby, Lake Quinault Lodge offers a restaurant and gift shop. Short trails in the area include the Big Spruce Tree Trail, Rainforest Nature Trail, Kestner Homestead Trail and the Maple Glade Trail. Explore the ocean beaches close-by as well as the National Fish Hatchery. For a more adventuresome day, drive up the valley to hike along the rivers or climb the 4,200 ft. Colonel Bob Peak for expansive views of the mountains and valleys on a clear day.
