DESCRIPTION:
Volunteer will serve as an ambassador of Shenandoah National Park in any of the four, high use, front-country campground locations. Volunteers will assist park staff in providing visitor services to the public utilizing the campgrounds or visiting the areas around the campgrounds.
Volunteer will serve as an ambassador of Shenandoah National Park in any of the four, high use, front-country campground locations (Mathew’s Arm Campground, Big Meadows Campground, Lewis Mount Campground and Loft Mountain Campground). Volunteers will assist park staff in providing visitor services to the public utilizing the campgrounds or visiting the areas around the campgrounds.
DUTIES
Description of Duties:
Greet visitors professionally and courteously and assists with campground site location if required.
Assist visitors in complying with campground rules and regulations by correctly answering questions.
Provide a variety of park information to visitors through person-to-person contact to include; park rules involving camping and food storage, safety issues concerning visitation in bear country, backcountry camping, hiking, fishing, National Park and Concession facilities, Interpretive Programs, road conditions, park natural resources and points of interest.
Assists staff with campground operations involving the National Park Reservation Service Program and visitors at first come first serve campgrounds with the correct payment of recreational fees but does not accept or handle fee payment transactions.
Receive and assist in the delivery of emergency messages for visitors.
Keep supervisor and Protection Rangers informed of any potential law enforcement problems or wildlife safety issues, but will take no direct action involving complex situations, disturbances or violation of regulations.
Assist in staffing Campground Ranger Stations; perform minor campground maintenance duties; compile occupancy and use reports & visitor contact logs; complete and submit Wildlife Sighting Reports obtained from visitors or personal observation.
Works safely and complies with the park’s Safety and Health Program and is concerned with the safety of park visitors.
Campground Hosts are required to wear the Volunteer uniform as approved for Shenandoah National Park.
Assist in protecting and managing the cultural and natural resources
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired:
Volunteer will be required to maintain a high level of professionalism, courtesy and friendliness. Volunteers must have an excellent communication skills, willingness to interact with the public and a desire to be part of the National Park Service and Shenandoah National Park mission.
Special Requirements:
Volunteers must be physically able to be active and able to commit to 32 hours/week. Must provide own camping equipment that is self-contained and fully equipped to provide adequate housing under various weather conditions.
