JOB DESCRIPTION:
The primary purpose of the positions is the dissemination of information to the public through various means. Duties include:
· Assists with the implementation of the visitor information program, coordinating with staff specialists to provide accurate, timely information to the public through in-person service hours, and responding to phone inquiries.
· Performs activities for the front desk when open such as opening and closing, raising, and lowering the flag, and maintaining a front desk presence.
· Arranges informational interpretive displays in the reception area or visitor center.
· Assists with developing, creating, and posting informational handouts and flyers concerning safety, events, and other items of importance.
· Supports the office by performing a variety of administrative tasks.
· Staffs the front desk three days a week during peak season May-October from 7:30 am – 4 pm (includes a 30-min. lunch and two 15-min. breaks)
· Work season start and end dates can be a negotiated. As many pay periods as wanted inside this time frame can be discussed. Starting at a minimum of two.
· One must have personal RV capabilities as no housing is available.
· Couples are highly sought, as VC shifts must be a minimum, two Volunteers per shift
ABOUT THE FOREST
A varied and mighty national forest, the Dixie National Forest, comprised of four Ranger Districts, is uniquely situated in Southern Utah, a primarily rural area surrounded by National Parks and State Parks on all sides. The lands that comprise the DNF are ancestral lands of the Southern Piute People and Ancient Fremont culture. More modern Pioneer settlement bring into the region another layer of unique and cultural landscape. Landscapes across the forest are wonderfully diverse, including Plateau, mountainous, and Desert settings. Our program of work is as diverse as the lands we manage, and the public we aim to serve. This includes watershed management protecting threatened and endangered species, timber stand restoration thinning that enhances wildlife habit, including a pinpointed Boreal Toad program and Beaver rehabilitation redistribution program, all while providing benefits to local economies, agriculture relationships of local Ranchers and Farmers on our Rangelands all while sustaining a world-class recreation program, and extensive trail system for hiking, horseback, and OHV, controlling invasive weeds, managing wildfires, engineering to support it all and communications and community engagement to share our work.
ABOUT THE AREA: Panguitch, Utah Powell Ranger District
The Panguitch area is an Incorporated Village and County Seat of Garfield County. Panguitch, is located in the South Central region of gorgeous Utah and is the gateway to Bryce Canyon National Park. Nestled high between the plateau country of the Markagunt and Paunsaugunt, the top of the geological formation of the Escalante Staircase. The Paunsaugunt Plateau that Red Canyon is eroded out of, is truly an “enchanted meadow and canyonland” that offers visitors a special glance into the life of a the great Southwest and is the location of various slot canyons, timbered and hoodoo forested trails, high Cliffs and peaceful lakes and meadows!
