JOB DESCRIPTION:
Hovenweep National Monument preserves six prehistoric villages built between A.D. 1200 and 1300 with exceptional masonry craftsmanship. We are looking for a single or couple interested in helping visitors learn about and safely enjoy this special place. Volunteers must commit to serving for a minimum of one month, 32 hours per week (may be multiple months).
Major Duties include:
– Staffing the visitor center up to 30 hours per week, following routing opening, closing, and operating procedures and providing warm, welcoming customer service.
– Answering visitor questions about the park; providing accurate information about/orientation to the area and recording visitor statistics.
– Roving park overlooks and trails to engage with visitors in informal interpretive conversations to foster visitors’ emotional/intellectual connections to park resources.
– Managing campground reservations using Recreation.gov software, site tags, etc.
– Completing assigned special projects as assigned.
– Working weekends and holidays as needed.
– If required level of background check completed: collecting fees for park entrance passes.
Light physical effort is required for most work, such as: standing and sitting for extended lengths of time; walking on uneven terrain (sand, rock, and large unmaintained steps and staircases) in a variety of outdoor high-desert weather conditions.
Free housing is available in a potentially shared multi-bedroom house or RV pad (electric and water hookups but no dump station).
