JOB DESCRIPTION:

Does the mighty ocean call to you? Do you find yourself longing to hear its calming surf as you educate others on how to respect and love the beach? If so, look no farther than Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Couples and individuals are encouraged to apply to serve as Volunteer Campground Hosts at our seashore campgrounds. Embracing the opportunity to connect with nature and fellow campers while supporting one of North Carolina’s most beautiful coastal destinations.

 

As a Campground Host, your role will be pivotal in maintaining a welcoming environment, assisting visitors with inquiries, and promoting responsible camping practices. You will represent the National Park Service through frontline guest interactions, acting as the eyes and ears of the campground to help educate visitors and report any significant issues to park rangers. This position is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts eager to share their love of camping and engaging with new people in a stunning natural habitat.

 

Duties:

· Must have an RV and be willing to make a minimum 6-week commitment. Maximum service term is 4 months.

· Actively participate in a safe workplace culture.

· Maintain own campsite in accordance with all park regulations and set a good example for other campers.

· Assist visitors with finding their reserved campsite or educate them on how to complete a reservation on recreation.gov.

§ Inform and educate visitors on park and camping regulations.

· Ensure that appropriate fees have been collected by verifying active reservations on online platform.

· Periodically make rounds in the campground to update records and remind campers of rules and regulations.

§ Hosts will use educational and informational contacts to gain compliance with park regulations.

§ Any law enforcement issues will be reported to park rangers. Only commissioned law enforcement rangers will take enforcement actions.

· Rove campground to provide information and informal interpretation to visitors.

§ Providing visitors with local, regional, and park information.

· Assist park personnel in keeping the campground area clean and free of litter.

§ Including cleaning of campground grills, collecting trash, and reporting any property damage or non-functional amenities to park staff.

§ In winter months, tasks include light cleaning of campground restrooms, training provided.

· Report any hazards in or out of the campground to an immediate supervisor.

· Inform Fee and/or Maintenance staff of sanitation problems and maintenance hazards.

· Occasionally assist visitors after hours.

· Communicate with staff via park issued duty station phone.

· Assist park personnel with minor projects (painting, sign replacement, weeding, mowing, restroom cleaning, etc.).

· Upon request, assist with park personnel during emergency operations (e.g. Traffic control, evacuation contacts)

 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

§ Must be at least 21 years of age.

§ Favorable background investigation.

§ Surety bond secured by the park in the volunteer’s name.

§ Ability to work independently with little to no supervision and as part of a team.

§ Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

§ Enjoy talking with and meeting new people of varying social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

§ Ability to effectively deal with stressful situations.

§ Ability to work on irregular natural ground.

§ Have a professional and courteous demeanor.

§ Ability to tolerate a wide range of weather and working conditions.

§ Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

§ Ability to operate a golfcart to travel around campground.

§ Knowledge and skills in outdoor recreation or natural sciences are beneficial.

§ Previous experience is desirable, but not a requirement.

Physical Demands:

§ Sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time.

§ Occasional bending and lifting.

 

Work Environment:

The work of a host is predominantly outdoors. Outer Banks weather is notoriously unpredictable and can change quickly. The area experiences thunderstorms, high winds, rain, high heat, extreme cold, tornados or waterspouts, and hurricanes. It is often hot and humid in the summer months, with heat index sometimes exceeding 100ºF. The Seashore is also home to several biting insects including biting flies, chiggers, mosquitos, sand gnats, and ticks.

 

Work Schedule:

§ Schedules will be coordinated with volunteer supervisor and will include holidays and weekends.

§ A minimum of 32 hours of service per week is required.

§ Due to the accessible nature of living within a campground, disruptions from guests may occur at anytime of day or night.

§ Volunteers will notify the volunteer supervisor of planned absences within one week, or as soon as possible, when the volunteer cannot be available to perform scheduled duties due to emergent personal or familial reasons.

 

Uniforms:

While on duty, the volunteer will wear a NPS volunteer shirt and hat. The volunteer will supply his/her own khaki pants/shorts, brown belt, and brown shoes. Volunteers should always look professional and follow the Outer Banks Group’s volunteer uniform policy.

 

Government Vehicles/ Personal Equipment:

§ Volunteers will utilize park provided equipment (golfcart) to travel through campground.

§ Personal cellular devices will be used for authentication access to our reservation management system. Otherwise, personal equipment will not be used.

 

Housing:

§ The volunteer must provide his/her own lodging (camper, trailer, or motorhome)

Reimbursement:

§ The volunteer will not be reimbursed for expenses.
