Job Description

We are Angels Rest Hiker’s Haven.  We host hikers on the Appalachian Trail.  Our peak seasons for thru hikers are May and June, September and October.  Outside of those “bubbles”, we host section hikers and other travelers.  We operate year round. We already have reservations starting mid-March.

We currently have a bunkhouse that would normally accommodate 16 hikers but CoVid-19 has us limiting to the four corners currently, hoping to expand to all eight lower bunks before May, depending on the positivity rate in Southwest VA.

We have tenting for 15-20 hikers.  In addition, we have five private rooms.  We have an elaborate Bathhouse with three individual full baths, kitchenette and laundry.

We have five RV/Van sites, partial hook-up.  There is 30 amp service to each site.  Last fall we completed our dump-station and have a pump set-up that allows us to empty rigs without guests/crew having to move off their site.  This year we had planned to finish by adding waterlines, but ‘Rona has knocked us off schedule a bit, and it looks like a Fall project for now.  However, if you don’t mind using your holding tank, we can easily get water to your rig, but you may find our bathroom and kitchen facilities will do the trick.  We best accommodate rigs under 28′ and accept vintage campers in good condition.

We run a shuttle service for what we call “slack packing” in which hikers don’t carry their heavy packs but instead hike with a day pack (water and snacks).  We drop them off in the morning and pick them up in the evening to return to the hostel for a shower, meal and comfy bed.   If they stay three nights, they earn a “Vortex Patch”.  It has quickly become “a thang” on the trail.

Crew members have their sites and use of all the common areas.  We pay crew a portion of sales on lodging and services (crewpensation), and 25% of shuttle sales to the drivers using our vehicles.  Tips are yours to keep. You are considered a 1099 contract laborer and therefore we let you set your own schedule for the most part.  If you hike, we provide transportation to and from our local trails and other outdoor attractions in the area.

If you might be interested, please take a look at our website.  I’ve posted our 2020 marketing video there that has some of the history and allows you to see the property and get a feel for “the vibe”.  In 2019 we were ranked #6 out of 121 hostels along the AT.  We are pretty proud of that since we didn’t get fully operational until 2017.  We look forward to speaking with you.

Happy Trails!
