DESCRIPTION:
Spend your summer in the Rocky Mountains at Oh Be Joyful Campground! This is a minimum 32 hours per week volunteer position. The incumbent must furnish his or her own trailer or RV under 40’ in length and live in the assigned campground.
Approximately 5 miles from Crested Butte, Colorado, Oh Be Joyful Campground is a 30-unit campground along the Slate River. Campsites are reservable on Recreation.gov. The campground itself gets its name from Oh Be Joyful Creek that features massive waterfalls and colorful wildflowers in the summer months. The campground is located at approximately 9,000 feet in elevation and the views are spectacular. The campground features direct trail connectivity to Crested Butte’s renowned mountain bike trail network, as well as hiking trail access into the Raggeds Wilderness. Oh Be Joyful is a popular destination for overnight campers as well as day users.
DUTIES
The campground host will serve as the official BLM representative in the campground. He/she greets visitors, provides information to the public, and helps with campground management. Daily tasks include but are not limited to ensuring visitor compliance with rules and regulations, update reservations for incoming campers with pre-paid sites, cleaning and stocking restrooms, picking up litter, and performing light maintenance tasks.
The campground host is expected to be committed to their duties at the campground and be available during daytime and weekend hours.
MAJOR DUTIES
Be familiar with and abide by the campground rules.
Answer questions, provide basic information and assistance to the public and maintain their cooperation with applicable rules and regulations. Information should primarily relate to the campground, recreation opportunities, the general area, travel routes, weather conditions, and services available.
Assist BLM in promoting acceptance of campground rules by advising visitors about the rules, especially if problems appear to be occurring that would result in disturbance to other visitors, damage to natural resources or the facilities, or present a wildfire hazard. Monitor use in the campground daily to identify violations and explain regulations.
Report public disturbances, criminal actions, property damage, personal accidents, fatalities or injuries, and fires to the BLM supervisor for proper action. Phone numbers will be provided.
Check and clean all toilets daily within campgrounds and during patrol checks, replace toilet paper rolls as needed, pickup litter in and around the toilet buildings and sweep out dirt, insects etc.
Update reservation signage for incoming campers with pre-paid sites.
Assist BLM park rangers with light maintenance tasks such as painting, sign repairs, trash pickup/transfer and weed removal around signs and along paths.
Maintain BLM patrol log to list all observed use and log such use on forms provided.
Document all volunteer hours spent working as the Campground host and turn them in monthly to the Outdoor Recreation Planner.
IMPORTANT: Host will not attempt to enforce any regulations by acting in a law enforcement capacity. Host will use educational and informational approach when appropriate to gain compliance with park regulations. Only commissioned law enforcement rangers will take enforcement actions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sitting, standing, bending, and walking for extended periods of time. Raking, shoveling, wielding loppers, and handling other small equipment and cleaning supplies for extended periods of time.
WORK SCHEDULE
· Work schedule will be coordinated with the volunteer’s supervisor. The season will last from mid-June through mid to late September.
· At minimum 32 hours per week, including holidays and weekends.
· Split shifts may be required.
· Will receive two (2) consecutive days off per week. Days off are usually Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
· Disruptions can occur any time of the day or night. Time worked will not include overnight hours except where active host duties are actually performed.
· Volunteer will notify the volunteer supervisor of planned absences within a reasonable amount of time, usually not less than one week, or as soon as possible when the volunteer cannot be available to perform scheduled duties due to sickness or other reasons.
UNIFORM
While on duty, the volunteer will wear a BLM volunteer shirt. A ball cap will also be provided for outdoor use. The volunteer should look professional at all times and follow the BLM volunteer uniform policy.
GOVERNMENT VEHICLES/PERSONAL EQUIPMENT
· No government vehicle will be provided for transportation.
· Cell service is limited within the campground, but daily check-ins on recreation.gov are necessary to update campsite reservations. A cell phone booster and access to the recreation.gov hub will be provided, but volunteer may need to rely on personal equipment to maintain connectivity.
HOUSING
· Volunteer must provide his/her own lodging (camper, trailer or motor home).
· No Sewer/water/electric provided by the campground. A portable solar unit may be available. Restrooms are available on site.
PETS
Pets are welcome to accompany their owner if they are socially acclimated and non-aggressive. Pets are to be contained in the owner’s residence or on a leash at all times. Pets are prohibited from government vehicles and campground buildings; they should not be left tied outside the campground kiosk. Please prevent excessive barking and properly dispose of pet waste.
REIMBURSEMENT
Volunteer will be paid a camp stipend based on days of service.
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES REQUIRED
· Must be at least 21 years of age.
· Favorable background investigation.
· Ability to work independently with little to no supervision and as part of a team.
· Ability to communicate orally.
· Enjoy meeting and talking with people.
· Ability to effectively deal with stressful situations.
· Ability to work on uneven terrain.
· Have a professional and courteous demeanor.
· Ability to tolerate a variety of weather and working conditions.
· Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
· Knowledge/skills in outdoor recreation or natural sciences are beneficial.
· CPR/AED training is helpful.
· Previous experience is desirable but not a requirement.
