DESCRIPTION:
Big Bend National Park is seeking a skilled artist with illustration and painting skills to assist Interpretive Rangers with the development of artwork for a new Junior Ranger book that we are producing. Approximately 7,000 activity books are distributed to young park visitors every year. As a Volunteer-In-Parks (VIP) artist, all material created during volunteer hours are considered National Park Service property and in the public domain. Samples of drawings, illustrations and paintwork need to be submitted as part of consideration for the position.
DUTIES
Confer with park staff to discuss and determine artwork to fit layout design of Junior Ranger book activity pages
Prepare illustration or rough sketches of material, discussing them with park staff and making necessary changes.
Draw and ink illustrations upon request from park staff for the Junior Ranger book.
Paint pictures for the front and back covers of the Junior Ranger book, with approved image and theme.
Use computer software to generate new images if needed.
Maintain archive of images, photos, or previous work products.

QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to work with little supervision and as part of a team for extended periods of time.
Volunteers must be able to communicate effectively and enjoy working with park staff.
Ability to use Adobe Illustrator is a desired but not required skill.
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of drawings and paintings.
Knowledge of appropriate design software and programs is desired but not required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
We are looking for someone who can be here at the park physically. Housing will be provided in the form of a full-hookup RV site. You need to have a RV or trailer. Work can be done from your RV or at the park headquarters office. Start and end dates are not fixed and can be modified to accommodate your schedule.
