DESCRIPTION:

Volunteers are stationed at Earl Landing and Campground on the Namekagon River and work to increase public awareness and understanding of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and its significance, serving as a live‐in host at Earl Landing and Campground. The people selected for this volunteer position can either be a single individual or a couple.

 

The primary responsibility of a Landing Host is to assist users by greeting and orienting canoeists, boaters, kayakers, inner tubers and campers, answering questions, directing traffic and parking on busy weekends, and sharing safety information and rules in a cheerful and helpful manner.

 

DUTIES

Through training, volunteers will become familiar with National Park Service and St. Croix National Scenic Riverway rules as well as learning area information and fishing and boating regulations. The host helps record visitor use counts throughout the season. Volunteers also perform light maintenance work around the area such as litter pickup, stocking of supplies and light clean‐up of a vault toilet building, and various other duties. The host monitors campground use and reports issues or problems to their direct supervisor, maintenance or law enforcement staff as needed. On busy weekends the host will assist park staff in directing traffic and coordinating parking at a busy river landing. A level parking pad and full hook‐ups are provided for use by volunteer selected for this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

St. Croix National Scenic Riverway was one of the first eight waterways protected by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 1968. Today the National Park Service protects and enhances 233 miles of this long, linear park. It includes 133 miles of the St. Croix River and the entire 99.5 miles of the Namekagon River. Earl Landing and Campground is a very busy day use access for inner tube, kayak, and canoe recreation, as well as a heavily used campground with 10 campsites used by groups and families.
