Volunteer Activities• Historical Preservation • Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information DescriptionVicksburg National Military Park Interpreter Program Area Information – Vicksburg National Military Park: The military park protects close to 2,000 acres in and around the city of Vicksburg, MS that helps tell the story of the Siege of Vicksburg from May 18th to July 4, 1863. Both Union and Confederate governments saw extreme importance in Vicksburg and its role in protecting the Mississippi River. Victory here gave the Union Army control of the Mississippi River. The Military Park includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, making it one of the largest collections of outdoor art in the world. Over half a million visitors visit the Military Park every year. For more information on Vicksburg NMP, please visit www.nps.gov/vick. Location Description: The Military Park lies just to the east of the city of Vicksburg. Vicksburg is a vibrant community, with over 46,000 people living in the city and surrounding area. The immediate area offers plenty of amenities including restaurants, grocery stores, doctors, hospital, daycare, and a robust housing market. The closest airport is located in Jackson, MS, approximately 40 minutes drive east. larger cities like New Orleans and Memphis are approximately 3 hours away. More area information can be found at www.visitvicksburg.com Position Description: This residential position is to primarially help the division of Interperetation in staffing the museums to provide orientation and historical information for visitors. Volunteers will be required to serve 32 hours a week but are not limited to this number. Of those hours, you are required to fill 27 of those hours in either Visitor Center or USS Cairo Museum. Other divisional opprotunities avaliable for residential volunteers include: Cultural Resources, Natural Resources, Administration, and Maintenance. Qualifications: Interpreters must be comfortable interacting with the public in a professional and courteous manner; have good oral communications and research skills; able to easily climb stairs, lift 25 pounds, and be in good health. Show initiative and poise with an outgoing disposition. This position will require memorizing interpretive information. Suitability: Adults, Seniors, College Students particularly interested in Civil War history. Opportunity Timeframe: This opprotunity is broken up into two terms: first term is November – January and second is February – April. We can be flexible on start and end days as needed. Volunteer must specify which term they are applying for or if they would like to apply for both. Hours: 32 hours of work/week. This may include some weekend hours. The schedule will vary and the candidate must have some flexibility. Housing: provided in the National Park in shared housing.
