DESCRIPTION:
The Wayne National Forest, Ironton Ranger District is looking for 2 Campground Host for the Lake Vesuvius Recreations Area. The Forest is looking for two individuals or couples that are courteous, helpful, and enthusiastic to help maintain the campground, welcome visitors, and provide visitors information about the area. Potential candidates will need to volunteer at least 20 hours per week, especially on weekends from April 8th through November 13, 2022.
The Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area is the Wayne National Forest’s premier developed recreation site and is named after the historic Vesuvius Iron Furnace. The rugged hills and out-cropping cliffs provide a scenic backdrop for this historical and beautiful site.
Lake Vesuvius contains a 143- acre lake and is a popular location for swimming and fishing. Anglers may catch bass, trout, catfish, crappie and bluegill. A boat ramp is located on-site. A swimming beach is located at Big Bend. A large playing field and multiple hiking trails are available within the recreation area. The accessible 1/3-mile boardwalk along the southwest edge of the lake provides an opportunity for a leisurely stroll through the area, and the slightly longer 1/2-mile Longbow Archery Trail, accesses at least 25 field targets for shooting practice. The area boasts more than 25 miles of hiking trails and more than 45 miles of horseback riding trails open April 15-Dec. 15.
The recreation area offers two developed family campgrounds, a group camp and group picnic shelters. The group campsite can accommodate up to 50 people for tent camping. It is equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets, showers and drinking water are provided. Group shelters can accommodate up to 150 people. Picnic tables, campfire rings and grills are provided, as well as accessible flush toilets and drinking water. One shelter provides electricity, while the other does not. Each has access to an amphitheater.

In exchange for volunteering, camp hosts will receive a free full hookup camp site with electric, water, and sewer. Candidates must provide their own camper trailer or recreational vehicle.

- In good health and physical condition (repeated bending and listing to clean restrooms and fire rings, pick up liter
- Able to operate a backpack leaf blower and weed eater
- Mowing campground area
- Picking up litter in and around campsites and recreation area
- Cleaning campsites, picnic areas, fire rings, and restrooms to a required standard
- Providing light maintenance (i.e. brushing, thinning, pruning or pulling vegetation in campground and along accessible pathway
- Providing information to visitors as needed
- Other necessary duties as assigned
