DEPT: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is currently recruiting volunteers for the Prairie Creek Campground located on the Alabama River Lakes Project. Prairie Creek Campground is situated beneath moss-draped oaks on the banks of Woodruff Lake. The lake is part of the scenic Alabama River in the region’s Black Prairie Belt. This waterfront campground offers 55 family RV sites and seven tent-only sites, all with electric hookups. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station and laundry facilities.

Volunteers are needed for a wide variety of outdoor duties and responsibilities which include but are not limited to twice daily check of the park, campsites, restrooms, playgrounds, shelters, and utilities for signs of vandalism, water leaks, and hazardous trees. Notify Corps personnel promptly.

Volunteers must work closely with park rangers, administrative staff, other volunteers and sometimes independently. Volunteers must be 21 years or older and good physical shape. While on duty you are required to stay overnight in the park. Volunteers must be friendly and treat everyone with respect. Training will be provided, and all volunteers must pass a federal background check before starting duties in the gatehouse.

Potential volunteers must be physically and mentally capable of performing volunteer tasks as they are required to work 20-25 hours per week, per site in exchange for RV site with water, electric and sewer hookups.

Volunteers must provide a factory-built “self-contained” recreational vehicle (RV) of the travel trailer or motor home type to serve as temporary living quarters and drivable vehicle for their use for the duration of their volunteer period. The unit shall be equipped with electrical hookup not to exceed 110 volts and shall be at least 18 feet in length. Maximum size of the trailer or motor home shall be determined by physical limitation of the site furnished. However, the contents of the trailer must remain in the trailer and restrooms/showers must be usable. The volunteers shall be the sole occupants of their site. Other family members shall not reside with the volunteer hosts or enter the gatehouse at any time.
