DATES: 4/15/2026 – 9/30/2026

DEPT: Forest Service

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Moab/Monticello Ranger District of the Manti-La Sal National Forest in southeastern Utah is looking for volunteer camp hosts for some of our developed campgrounds.  We are looking for an individual or a couple to live at and work in our beautiful campgrounds.  The positions are available typically from late April/early May and usually until early or mid-October.  The dates are flexible due to weather conditions in spring and fall. The work schedule is typically Thursday though Monday as most people recreate and visit public lands on the weekend. Two days off in the middle of the week can be spent relaxing in the campground or spent exploring the amazing landscapes in and around the forest.  General tasks include posting reservations, cleaning and maintaining campsites and facilities, ensuring safety and compliance of regulations and acting as a liaison between the public and the US Forest Service.  These positions are reimbursed volunteer positions and are not to be considered employment with the US Forest Service or US Government.

Pioneer Campground within the larger Buckeye Reservoir Recreation Area is located about 1.5 hours from Moab, Utah and 30 minutes from Paradox, Colorado.  It has 30 sites that are clustered among Ponderosa Pines with splendid views of Buckeye Reservoir and the La Sal Mountains in the distance.  It also has one group site on the opposite side of the reservoir including dispersed (free) camping surrounding other shores of the lake.  There is a small boat ramp for access for boats with motors  5 HP and less.  It is very popular for non-motorized watersports and fishing.  The reservoir is stocked yearly with Rainbow Trout.  The campground is quiet and serene with some busy weekends and holidays.  There is a solar panel and sewer hook-up for hosts, but there is no water connections, however there are nearby springs.  Weather is quite temperate with highs in the mid-80s and varying low temps depending on the season and sits at 7400 feet in elevation.  There is ample recreation opportunities and exploration to be found in the area.
