Using Google Forms to hire work campers? Read this first.

Plenty of small businesses use Google apps to run their operations, and they often use Google Forms to accept job applications from work campers. However, there is one form setting that you should know about before you decide to use them. This article will walk you through that critical setting, and how you can fix it yourself. Let’s dive in!

The problem

The default setting when creating a Google Form is that it’s only accessible to people within your organization / company.  This default setting makes total sense when you’re taking a company survey, or want to collect information from people who have Google accounts. Here’s the problem: Respondents will be required to sign in to Google. This means people who do NOT have Google accounts will NOT be able to apply. For example, a candidate with a Yahoo account (or anyone NOT logged into Google) will only see a prompt to “log into Google” when they try to access your form. Not good. This poor applicant experience hurts your recruitment efforts.

How to solve it

You may want to consider updating the default setting in Google Forms labeled “Restrict users in {your company} and its trusted organizations”.

Important: If you turn off this restriction setting, anyone with the link can fill out your form. For job applications, you may want to do this if it makes sense for your business. Here’s how to update the setting:

  • Open a form in Google Forms.
  • At the top of the form, click Settings.
  • Next to “Responses,” click the Down arrow.
  • Turn off Restrict to users in [yourdomain.com] and its trusted organizations.

NOTE: Kamper Jobs does allow Google Forms to be used as the application URL in job listings, but does require that the settings allow anyone to apply.

Changed your mind about Google Forms?

If you’ve changed your mind about using Google Forms, you may want to consider Kamper Jobs’ Premium Employer Access, which includes an application management module. Premium Access also gives you access to the work camper resume library to proactively recruit.
