DESCRIPTION:
Live, volunteer, and play along the Wild and Scenic Trinity River. As a Campground Host you will represent the Bureau of Land Management to oversee visitor use and help with all routine tasks of managing the campground.
The campground host will serve as the official BLM representative in the campground. He/she greets visitors, provides information to the public, and helps with campground management. Daily tasks include but are not limited to ensuring visitor compliance with rules and regulations, monitoring daily campground fee compliance, cleaning and stocking restrooms, picking up litter, and performing light maintenance tasks.
The campground host is expected to be committed to their duties at the campground and be available during daytime and weekend hours, therefore outside work or existing jobs are not permitted while being a host for BLM. The host will receive a $25 per day reimbursement. Couples are allowed to be campground hosts, but they will be reimbursed as a single person.
DUTIES
Be familiar with and abide by the campground rules.
Answer questions, provide basic information and assistance to the public and maintain their cooperation with applicable rules and regulations. Information should primarily relate to the campground, recreation opportunities, the general area, travel routes, weather conditions, and services available.
Assist BLM in promoting acceptance of campground rules by advising visitors about the rules, especially if problems appear to be occurring that would result in disturbance to other visitors, damage to natural resources or the facilities, or present a wildfire hazard. Monitor use in the campground daily to identify violations and explain regulations.
Report public disturbances, criminal actions, property damage, personal accidents, fatalities or injuries, and fires to the BLM supervisor for proper action. Phone numbers will be provided.
Keep bulletin board posted with visitor information provided by supervisor.
Check and clean all toilets daily within campgrounds and during patrol checks, replace toilet paper rolls and paper seat covers as needed, pickup litter in and around the toilet buildings and sweep out dirt, insects etc., and keep showers clean and locked.
Assist BLM maintenance worker with light maintenance tasks such as painting, sign repairs, trash pickup/transfer and weed removal around signs and along paths.
Wear at least one part of the BLM volunteer uniform when on duty; consisting of hat, volunteer vest, and name tag.
Maintain BLM patrol log to list all observed use and log such use on forms provided.
Attend scheduled volunteer staff meetings. Notify supervisor with anticipation if you need to reschedule for any reason.
Document all volunteer hours spent working as the Campground host and turn them in monthly to the Outdoor Recreation Planner.
HOURS PER WEEK
The hours are flexible. A minimum of 30 hours per week (6 hours per day, 5 day per work week, between 10 am and 6 pm) is normal and weekend work is expected. Days off should be planned for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Hours of work are negotiable and holiday work is expected. The host will inform the BLM supervisor if they will be absent from the campground or if they need to take time off during their regular schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS
At this location a successful Campground Host will have strong interpersonal skills, a passion to promote and protect natural resources through responsible recreation, and a strong sense of integrity to follow through with the duties as describe with a positive attitude.
Most of this job will involve meeting and conversing with many different types of recreation site visitors. The Host must therefore be able to communicate with the public in a friendly and courteous manner.
As a representative of the BLM, Host must be able to project a positive image to the public. Host must have a neat and clean appearance while keeping a maintained and orderly living site. Items other than camp unit and camp equipment shall be stored out of sight, not around the campsite.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
Host must be able to house him/herself on-site in a self-contained camping unit (if facilities are provide unit may not be self-contained). The camping unit and area around the unit must remain clean and orderly. Tarps and other personnel items should not be left around the area unless approved by the Host’s supervisor.
Pets are only permitted with prior approval by BLM Supervisor. Approved pets must be kept on leash or kenneled at all times. Cats will not be allowed to roam within or around the hosts campground site. The BLM Supervisor will be contacted for approval prior to the host having any new pets living at the site.
The planting of gardens or placement of decorative objects around the Host site will be approved by the Host’s supervisor prior to installation.
The Host is not authorized to purchase items or supplies (e.g. fuel, signs) for BLM without authorization from the Host’s BLM Supervisor or BLM Firearms are allowed within the (Campground Host Site) campground with notification of the Host’s BLM Supervisor. If firearms are kept at the Host Site area they will be secured in an area such as a locked cabinet or gun safe.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Douglas City Campground is a developed riverside campground nestled among soaring trees along the Wild and Scenic Trinity River. It is located several miles from the small town of Douglas City, 7 miles from the nearest major town, Weaverville, and about 40 miles from Redding, where the BLM Field Office is located. With 20 tent/trailer sites, restrooms, water spigots, and showers, it is the most developed campground on Steiner Flat Road where the BLM manages two riverside campgrounds, several river access points, and daily use recreation areas. Popular with fisherman and pleasure boaters alike, this clear, cold section of the river is world famous for its fly fishing. Paddlers enjoy the narrow valley with Ponderosa Pine, Douglas fir, Oaks, and Madrone trees coating the walls of the canyons. There is a meandering riverside trail that connects several of the BLM sites and affords opportunities for exploration, quiet contemplation, and access to excellent swimming holes.
The Campground Host will stay at a dedicated site with water, sewage, electricity, and access to a telephone landline while using the same restrooms and showers as the guests. Cell phone service is spotty at site but reliable service can be found nearby.
Due to number of free, primitive camping areas nearby, user conflicts can occur when non-paying visitors attempt to use the amenities provided at the Douglas City Campground. The Campground Host will need keep a watchful eye to ensure a quality experience for the campground’s registered, paying guests. The most successful Campground Hosts have held a proactive and positive attitude, engaging visitors on a regular basis, which prevents the majority of potential conflicts.
