ADDRESS:W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir
499 Reservoir Road
Wilkesboro, North Carolina 28697-7462

DEPT: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

DATES: 4/1/2024 – 10/31/2024

DESCRIPTION:

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is seeking up to 2 individuals or a couple (preferred) to fill one Visitor Center Host and Guide position at the Visitor Assistance Center (VAC) / Environmental Education Center (EEC) for the 2024 recreation season from April 1 to October 31. The VAC and EEC are co-located in same building with the EEC located downstairs and accessible by inside stairways or an outside entrance. Hosts will work up to 4 consecutive days followed by 3-4 consecutive days off. Hosts will work 25-30 hours per week (25 hours for an individual, 30 shared hours for couples). Couples do not have to work together but may share hours (i.e., one individual works the first 4 hours then the other individual works the second 4 hours). When scheduled or on duty, hosts will wear issued volunteer clothing; open and close the VAC/EEC; answer visitor questions regarding recreation opportunities; conduct tours of the VAC/EEC; answer telephones; conduct checks of the facilities for cleanliness and perform light general maintenance as needed; sell passes and bookstore items; stock brochures and bookstore items; assist with interpretive programs; inform visitors of park rules, regulations, and policies; collect comment cards and surveys; relay complaints, compliance issues, overcrowding, and maintenance actions to Park Ranger staff; and report administratively to the Volunteer Coordinator and functionally to the Interpretive Ranger. The Volunteer Coordinator and Interpretive Program Ranger will identify the clock hours necessary to provide optimum coverage and services to visitors. The VAC will be open on weekdays while the EEC will be open on the weekends and holidays. NOTE: In addition to VAC/EEC duties, the host residing at Berry Mountain will open the park’s gate at 8am and close it at 8pm on their scheduled days of work.

Hosts and Guides will work both independently and with USACE staff, volunteers, and contractors. Work will be mostly indoors. Work will involve frequent interaction with adults and children. Climbing stairs/steps are required as the VAC and EEC are co-located in same building with the EEC located downstairs and accessible by inside stairways or an outside entrance. The lake is located within a 15–20-minute drive of restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, auto and RV repair shops, entertainment venues, and medical facilities. Average high temperatures range from low 70’s to high 80’s with average low temperatures ranging from low 50’s to high 60’s during May to September. On average, Wilkesboro has 213 sunny days and gets 50 inches of rain per year.

An RV campsite with water, electric, and sewer will be provided at Berry Mountain Park in exchange for volunteer service. Dump stations and shower houses are in the campgrounds to which the volunteer will have access. Internet access is available at the gatehouse and the Visitor Assistance Center.
