JOB DESCRIPTION:
Note: For safety reasons and due to the nature of the position of driving on remote backroads for several hours a day, we are looking for a couple or pair volunteering together.
About:
This position will be based out of Rio Grande Village, which is located on the east side of Big Bend National Park. Backcountry patrol volunteers conduct patrols of 4×4 dirt roads by vehicle as well as patrols of trails on foot. They greet visitors in the field, assist them in locating their campsites, answer questions, and advise them of backcountry regulations.
The main tasks include:
Pick up litter in backcountry campsites, repair or replace site delineation markers, clean up illegal campfires, rake out off-road vehicle tracks, and report road and campsite conditions to park dispatch and law enforcement staff via radio and phone.
Desired skills and experience:
Driving 4×4 vehicles over very rough terrain consisting of rock ledges, angled driving surfaces, and deep sand.
Changing flat tires in the backcountry
Ability to extract your own stuck vehicle or a visitor vehicle
Ability to communicate in a friendly, patient and helpful manner
This is a minimum 32-hours per week volunteer position. The incumbent must be available for the entire 3-month season and furnish his or her own trailer or RV under 40’ in length and live in Rio Grande Village. Electrical, water and sewer hookups are provided free of charge and propane is reimbursed. Public showers and laundry facilities are available in the Rio Grande Village Store during this time. Additional laundry facilities are provided in the Rio Grande Village housing area.
Volunteers who work outside must be identifiable to the public. Uniform consists of dark brown or tan pants/shorts and a khaki work shirt with VIP patch sewn on the left-hand sleeve. Volunteers may obtain volunteer work shirts and hats at the volunteer cache.
Passing a background investigation and driver’s license check is required.
