Job Description

The host serves as a positive public representative of the BLM to the visiting/recreating public. The host will provide visitor services at developed Recreation Sites. Duties include visitor assistance such as answering questions about recreation opportunities in the local area, natural resources of the area, navigating roads in the area, or campground rules and policies.  The host performs light maintenance such as cleaning and restocking toilets, cleaning throughout the Recreation Site, collecting trash and garbage, light painting, maintaining signs and bulletin boards, maintaining fee stations, and recording visitor fee information. The host also responds to visitor problems or complaints and works to resolve the problem, or contacts the appropriate resource to resolve the situation, as needed.

The host does not perform prohibited functions such as firefighting, law enforcement, or similar hazardous work.   The host does not enforce recreation fee payment compliance.  The host is not authorized to perform any work that requires specific training or credentials (chain saw work, electrical, welding, etc.), unless they are trained, currently certified, and authorized by the BLM line supervisor.

This is a live in position at the Recreation Site. The host must have their own self-contained recreational vehicle to live in while on duty. The host may be authorized to use a government vehicle for official use, upon completion of defensive driving training, vehicle orientation, and ‘authorization to operate a government vehicle’ form.

BLM will provide the host with all necessary tools, supplies, equipment, and training to perform all work. BLM will provide the host with a campsite with electric, sewer, drinking water, and propane furnished by BLM.

A formal background check will be required prior to starting date.

Reimbursement Details

Lodging or camp rate reimbursement, at the rate of $30 per day on duty, may be provided to the volunteer for the convenience of BLM. The host will be reimbursed for scheduled work days, as well as extra work days required for training or holiday work. BLM will reimburse the host for the use of their private vehicle, to commute round trip once per week between their assigned Recreation Site and their local residence or Klamath Falls if residence is out of the local area, and for other required work related trips, at the rate of $0.20 per mile.
