Become a Rio Chama Steward this summer and spend your days enjoying the beautiful views along the river!

The Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest is looking for a motivated volunteer to serve as a steward of recreation sites along the Rio Chama. These sites include a 25 site campground, a dispersed camping area, and a couple of kayak/raft launch sites. The area attracts campers, rafters, CDT hikers, painters, photographers, fishermen, site seers, and travelers. The Rio Chama Campground is a primitive campground with no electric or water hook ups available.

All supplies will be provided by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

DUTIES

General duties of a Rio Chama Steward include:

  • Assist rafters, campers, hikers, and travelers by providing them with information about the local area, explaining basic forest regulations, act as eyes and ears of the Forest Service by monitoring use and reporting violations or emergencies to the proper authorities
  • Clean and service restrooms, fire pits, campsites and general grounds maintenance
  • Trash removal
  • Clear walkways of weeds
  • Some use of basic hand tools for light maintenance
  • Work safely while adhering to all USFS safety policies
  • Pick up litter
  • Have fun
QUALIFICATIONS

-Stewards are to be neat in appearance and to keep recreation sites tidy and welcoming.

-An RV pad is provided at the Coyote Ranger District compound, with electricity, water, and trash service. This is a remote site, out of cell phone service range. Phone and internet services are not provided, but can be obtained at the person’s expense.

-Volunteers must be able to lift 30 lb. objects, travel 50 miles to the Rio Chama daily in a government vehicle (note: pets are not allowed in work trucks), and be able to work in a variety of weather conditions including rain and high temperatures.

-Volunteers will need to complete a couple of trainings prior to beginning their duties, all materials will be supplied by the Coyote Ranger Station.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

We ask that Rio Chama stewards be available from early May to after Labor Day weekend. Stewards are expected to be available to the public throughout the weekend, from Thursday to Monday, and on holidays, for a maximum of six hours each day. Will have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. Volunteers will wear at least one component of a Forest Service Volunteer uniform during on-duty time.
