ADDRESS: Big Bend National Park; 1 Panther Junction; Big Bend National Park, Texas 79834

DEPT: National Park Service

DATES: 5/15/2021 – 10/31/2021

DESCRIPTION:

The primary duties and responsibilities of the campground host are to help National Park Service personnel ensure that campers have a safe, enjoyable visit and that campers are aware of campground rules and regulations. From May 1-Oct. 31, 2021, you will be managing only 17 sites, all on the reservation system. Some backcountry patrol may also be included in the work.

Rio Grande Village Campground is a fairly large campground with 100 campsites near the banks of the Rio Grande River, the international border between the United States and Mexico. It is one of the most popular campgrounds in Big Bend hosting small sites for tents up to large pull-through sites for RVs up to 40’ in length.

This campground is at an elevation of 1,850 ft. Because cold air tends to sink into lower valleys during the peak seasons of fall and winter, temperatures are cooler here than in other parts of the park during these times. Being prepared for all types of weather is advised.

The campground also acts as a launching point for various trips down the Rio Grande via access at the boat ramp in the group campground. It is close to the Boquillas Port of Entry allowing visitors, with a valid passport, to cross over into Mexico for the day. Additionally, there are numerous hiking trails and back country roads for exploration into Big Bend’s backcountry, along with Hot Springs for a nice soak when temperatures are cooler in the winter months. Only 17 campsites are open for visitor use from May 1, 2021-October 31, 2021. All 17 sites are reservable.

This is a minimum 32-hours per week volunteer position. The incumbent must furnish his or her own trailer or RV under 40’ in length and live in the Rio Grande Village Campground. Electrical, water and sewer hookups are provided free of charge and propane is reimbursed. Public showers and laundry facilities may be available in the Rio Grande Village Store during this time (under repair). Additional laundry facilities are provided in the Rio Grande Village housing area near the volunteer RV hookups.

There is wifi in the Rio Grande Village campground for use by the camphost only.

Full-time and part-time volunteers who will work outside must be identifiable to the public. Uniform consists of dark brown pants/shorts and a khaki work shirt with VIP patch sewn on the left-hand sleeve. Volunteers may obtain volunteer work shirts and hats at the volunteer cache.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the campground host are to help National Park Service personnel ensure that campers have a safe, enjoyable visit and that campers are aware of campground rules and regulations.
