ADDRESS: 1371 Wildlife Drive Springville, Tennessee, 38356
DATES: 3/1/2025 – 11/1/2025
DEPT: Fish & Wildlife Service
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1945 following the Migratory Bird Act. It is over 51,000 acres of various habitat types set aside for the conservation of migratory birds with a focus on wintering waterfowl. The refuge is broken up into 3 key portions, called units, following a 65-mile stretch of the Tennessee River – Big Sandy, Busseltown and Duck River Unit(s).
Duck River Unit is the largest of the three units and the most actively managed as well, so there is never a short supply of work to be done. Volunteer tasks may include mowing, weed eating, spraying invasive plant species, facilities maintenance and assisting the biologist with tasks such as field work projects and summer wood duck banding.
Duck River Unit is a great place for wildlife observation, photography, citizen science and outdoor recreation. There is the Duck River Bottoms Overlook, Pintail Point Observation Blind and the Blue Goose Boulevard Interpretive drive which are fantastic locations for photography. There are several boat ramps scattered across the unit for boaters and kayakers to access both the Tennessee and Duck rivers. Fun fact about the Duck River, it is the 3rd most biologically diverse river in the world, which both the The Nature Conservancy and National Geographic wrote articles about. In short, if you enjoy fishing or aquatic wildlife in general, spend a summer with us. The refuge complex also offers scenic views to the hikers and bikers who stop in and visit.
In exchange for providing us with your time and service, the refuge will provide volunteers with a covered, full hookup camper pad, a free laundry facility located adjacent to the camper pad, propane, a work vehicle and any personal protection equipment needed.
