JOB DESCRIPTION:

Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument:

The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument offers a chance to explore a remote and scenic part of Montana shaped by the Missouri River. Visitors can paddle along the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, hike to overlooks, observe wildlife, or visit historic sites that tell the story of the region. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the monument is open throughout the year and provides opportunities for outdoor recreation, quiet exploration, and a deeper connection to the natural and cultural history of the Missouri River Breaks.

 

Position Overview:

The volunteer campground host is primarily responsible for ensuring fees are paid for multi-day river trips, providing a variety of campground services, and monitoring the drinking water system. Hosts can also expect to supply information regarding paddling the river, explaining rules and regulations, ensuring visitors have all required equipment, posting weather forecasts and river flows, etc. Hosts need to possess good communication skills in which to engage with the public in a friendly and courteous manner and have a good grasp on outdoor ethics and enjoy camping!

 

Duties:

Primary hosting duties include, but are not limited to:

-Daily campground fee compliance, campsite maintenance duties.*

-Monitoring facilities and campground for visitor security and potential safety hazards.

-Report to staff when repairs are needed or when incidents occur.

-Provide regular updates to the Monument Interpretive Center on occupancy levels.

-Daily interactions with visitors, including greeting, answering questions regarding area recreational opportunities, and informing visitors of rules and regulations within the campground.

 

*Maintenance duties include but are not limited to: routine restroom stocking and cleaning, minor amenity repairs, campsite cleanup (trash pick-up, fire ring cleaning), weed whacking, grass mowing on a zero turn mower. All tools and safety equipment needed are provided by the BLM.

 

Location Info:

This position is located at Coal Banks Landing Campground which is 20 minutes from Big Sandy (gas, grocery), 40 minutes to Fort Benton (gas, grocery, laundry, hospital) and 80 minutes away from Great Falls (hospital, restaurants, airport). This is the primary boat or paddle launch location for visitors to experience the “White Cliffs” section of the Upper Missouri River.

 

Schedule:

These positions require the host to work on average a minimum of 32 hours per week, but you may be asked to do a bit more depending on time of year. Flexibility is a must. Ability to be at the campground during peak times of use as well as Thursdays-Sundays and ALL holidays are considered heavy use days. A full commitment from mid-March to October 1st is preferred.

 

Accommodations & Reimbursement:

-RV or trailer sites with full hookups (electric, water, sewer).

-Wi-fi is available for basic internet usage within contact station (email, browsing)

-A non-itemized reimbursement for expenses, not to exceed the daily camp rate (currently $42/day), with reimbursements processed monthly (taking 2-3 weeks to process).

– Volunteers who complete a minimum of 250 service hours are eligible for a free Federal Interagency Annual Pass.
