JOB DESCRIPTION:

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is seeking up to 4 volunteers (2 individuals and/or 2 couples (preferred) ) to fill Park Attendant positions for the 2025 recreation season from May 26 (Memorial Day) to September 1 (Labor Day) at Boomer Park (Day Use). Boomer Park is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each season. Attendants will work up to 32 hours per week on a 4-days-on / 4-days-off rotation. The Recreation Ranger will identify the clock hours necessary to provide optimum coverage and services to visitors. Couples do not have to work together but may share hours (i.e., one individual works the first 4 hours then the other individual works the second 4 hours). Hosts are expected to stay on-site as much as possible on their scheduled days. When scheduled or on duty, hosts will wear issued volunteer clothing; open and close gates; operate the gatehouse during designated hours; assist visitors with paying fees using the cashless fee machines; make rounds in the day use area; answer visitor questions regarding recreation opportunities; conduct checks of playgrounds and facilities for cleanliness and safety and perform light general maintenance as needed; assist with promoting and assisting Rangers with interpretive programs; inform visitors of park rules, regulations, and policies; collect comment cards and surveys; relay complaints, compliance issues, overcrowding, and maintenance actions to Park Ranger staff; promote water safety by assisting with the life jacket loaner program; assist Rangers and first responders with emergency actions such as traffic control; and report administratively to the Volunteer Coordinator and functionally to the Recreation Program Ranger.

 

Attendants will work both independently and with USACE staff, volunteers, and contractors. Work will be a combination of outdoor and indoor with some hours in the gatehouse. Work will involve frequent interaction with adults and children. Climbing stairs/steps may be required on occasions as some areas have multiple levels. Duties may involve working near or on the water to include swim beaches, boat ramps, and boats. Duties may involve using steps and walking on uneven terrain. The lake is located within a 15–20-minute drive of restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, auto and RV repair shops, entertainment venues, and medical facilities. Average high temperatures range from low 70’s to high 80’s with average low temperatures ranging from low 50’s to high 60’s during May to September. On average, Wilkesboro has 213 sunny days and gets 50 inches of rain per year. 

 

An individual volunteer must complete 25 hours of work per week to qualify for a free full hook-up campsite. A couple who volunteers together must complete 30 hours of work per week to qualify for a free full hook-up campsite, however those hours are shared. Volunteers must provide their own RV/Travel Trailer and reside on a designated campsite inside Boomer Park during the duration of the season. 

 

An RV campsite with water, electric, and sewer will be provided at Boomer Park in exchange for volunteer service. Dump stations and shower houses are in the campgrounds to which the volunteer will have access. Internet access is available at the gatehouse.  

 

 Total Available Hours: Hosts must be available to work a 4-days-on / 4-days-off rotation up to 32 hours per week. Host will work up to 8 hours per day on their scheduled days though the hours may not be consecutive.
