Volunteer Activities• Computers • Office/Clerical • Other • Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information • General Assistance DescriptionOVERVIEW The interpretive team at the Marin Headlands, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area provides opportunities for visitors to become better acquainted with their national park and as well as a sense of belonging and stewardship through friendly visitor contacts, meaningful interpretive talks and tours, roving trails to ensure safety and provide information on cultural, historical and natural points of interest. The interpretive team works to educate the community and visitors, which leads to deeper appreciation of their parks lands and provides meaningful experiences. The Marin Headlands provides an opportunity to work in a highly visible park site and engage with diverse audiences, learn and share knowledge on the natural, cultural and historical aspects of the area. This internship opportunity will enhance communication skills and professionalism through public speaking, interpretive writing, and special projects while enriching the experience of all those who care and visit the Marin Headlands. POSITION DESCRIPTION The Marin Headlands Interpretive Intern works with a broad range of audiences through offering a variety of interpretive experiences and services. This intern’s primary responsibility will be to orient visitors to the site, develop interpretive programs and assist with the day to day operations and special events. Working as part of a team and independently, the intern will receive intensive support and coaching to learn interpretive theory, and develop and lead interpretive programs that support the mission of the National Park Service and the goals of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This involves researching, organizing, and implementing various types of interpretive programs, and helping to coordinate special events. In addition, the intern develops experience in a specialized area(s) of park operations depending on interests and professional goals. The specialized areas include but not limited to support for the management of the park’s website and social media, volunteer program, and special event planning. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Research, Organize and Implement a wide range of Interpretive activities from interpretive roves to formal programs Staff information table and welcome visitors to the park Rove extensive trails systems ensuring visitor safety and compliance of park guidelines Under the guidance and coaching of Marin Headlands staff, develop, deliver, and evaluate a 15-minute interpretive talks to the diverse visiting public Organize and plan 1-hour tours of the park for visitors, special groups and specialized interpretive programs. Operate NPS radio in accordance with NPS regulations Promote and engage youth in the Jr. Ranger programs Assist with emergencies to the level of the training When needed operate government vehicles Additionally Develop interpretive content for the park’s website and social media Support and develop skills in volunteer management Organize, plan and coordinate volunteer service projects Collaborate with park staff to gain experience in special event coordination and planning BENEFITS Gain leadership and interpretation experience at a highly respected agency (National Park Service) with a model partnership with the non-profit agency The Golden Gate National Park Conservancy To live in (if housing is needed) and enjoy the scenery, wildlife and cultural resources of a spectacular National Park Housing is available for those living more than fifty (50) miles from the park. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Enthusiasm about learning, developing skills, and sharing the knowledge of park resources and stories with diverse audiences A love of nature, outdoor work, and at times getting your hands dirty Energetic, flexible, self-motivated, and a sense of humor Desire to work in a team and to work with a diversity of people with different backgrounds, ethnicity, races, genders, sexualities, ages, and viewpoints Good communication skills; treats others with respect; speaks and writes clearly and effectively Basic computer literacy, Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with database operations or Photoshop/InDesign a plus A valid driver’s license, clean driving record Personal transportation to and from work site. A vehicle is highly recommended, but not required.
