Volunteer Activities• Campground Host • Other • Visitor Information Photo Courtesy of NPS DescriptionWe are looking for couples or individuals to serve as campground hosts at the Piñon Flats Campground inside Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve for the 2020 season. If you join the volunteer program team at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, you spend the season living next to the tallest dunes in North America! The sand dunes are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. Experience this diversity through hiking, sand sledding, splashing in Medano Creek, wildlife watching, and more! Enjoy amazing scenery in beautiful Colorado, too. Activities in the surrounding area include: hiking, camping, hot springs, wildlife viewing, stargazing, and outstanding solitude. Alamosa is nearby (34 miles) with access to groceries, shopping, health clinics, movie theaters, restaurants, and Adams State University. The park will issue shirts, jackets, and baseball caps to be returned at the end of the season. Due to remoteness reliable personal transportation and a valid driver’s license are required. Laundry facilities are available at the park. An RV pad with sewer, water and electric hookups (30 amp) will be available. Campground Host duties: The volunteer campground host will: help groups find and set up in their reserved site, provide information to campers about park and area resources, monitor campers to ensure compliance with established regulations, educate about food storage regulations, report maintenance issues, provide minor upkeep at the campground, notify appropriate park staff in case of an emergency, Communicate effectively with park staff to keep up to date on campsites assignments. Hosts will volunteer 40 hours per week with a minimum of a two month commitment. Benefits include: A free RV campsite in Piñon Flats Campground, which has pristine views of the dunes and the mountains. Propane reimbursement will also be included. There will be training opportunities with skilled NPS staff and long-time volunteers. The opportunity to live and work in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve! Requirements: This is an exciting opportunity for someone who likes to meet people of all ages and backgrounds, loves working with people, and enjoys variety in their days. The ideal candidate must be comfortable working with people of all ages and abilities and have strong communication skills. The volunteer will be working without daily supervision, and must be self-motivated. Also required: Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Due to new regulations, both fingerprints and pictures are now required. Valid state driver’s license required. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. You will be required to wear a volunteer uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform will be provided. You may be asked to work weekends and holidays. Must be able to walk on uneven terrain and be comfortable working in high altitude locations Provide his or her own tent / RV / Trailer and camping / cooking equipment Note: Start and end dates may be flexible.
