Volunteer Activities• Campground Host DescriptionThis Bureau of Land Management volunteer position is an opportunity to be a camp host at Matthews Recreation Area, providing public service while hosting and maintaining the 75 acre Matthews Recreation Site. Volunteers are responsible for reporting all taxable income. You must keep a daily log of your work with completed hours. Matthews Recreation Area is located 9 miles north of Miles City, Montana on Valley Drive East. It is next to the Yellowstone River and a part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Camping, walking, bird hunting, fishing, and picnicking are just a few of the exciting activities taking place at this beautiful fee-free site. Family reunions and weddings are common. This site has gravel roads leading into it, a double vault toilet, fire rings, picnic tables, a large ramada, an ADA fishing access area, and an ADA concrete trail. There is no water available but there is electricity and sewage located at the camp host site only. Volunteer service is greatly appreciated and critical to helping protect our public lands and serving the people. General duties include: Providing visitor information including:recreational opportunities, rules and regulations of the site Maintaining the campground and stocking/cleaning vault toilets (seasonal employees will provide the majority of the vault toilet cleaning) Season, Schedule, and Utilities: Campground hosts must be available from approximately the beginning of May thru October 1st, with an option to extend the season on either or both ends if desired. Hosts typically volunteer 4-5 days a week, including weekends and holidays. A full season’s commitment is required. A typical commitment is 2-3 hours/day and 20 hours/week. Hosts are on duty in both the morning and evening during daylight hours to greet visitors and to conduct any compliance checks needed. The Outdoor Recreation Planner (ORP) will coordinate with the host regarding the time of day to complete any maintenance duties. Days off will be taken mid-week (Tues/Wed. or Wed./Thurs.) unless previous arrangements are made with the ORP. The host is not required to stay on site during days off. The schedule could vary depending on seasonal demands and needs. Hosts must provide their own RV or camp trailer in which to live onsite. Pets may be permitted on a case by case basis but have to be approved ahead of time. Please note that all pets must be on a leash, including host pets, within the campground. Also, ATVs, UTVs, and motorcycles have to stay on existing roads and trails. A stipend may be offered and will be discussed during interview process. The post office is located in Miles City, where hosts can either pay for PO Box or can have mail delivered to the office. Campground Maintenance: All supplies, tools, and equipment are provided by the BLM. Ensuring a clean and well-maintained site for the public is of the utmost importance. Daily site maintenance duties will be conducted by seasonal BLM employees; hosts could be required to perform some or all of the following: Cleaning and stocking restrooms Shoveling and cleaning out fire rings Mowing/line trimming (as needed) Reporting vandalism or facilities that are in need of repair Litter pick up Installing/repairing signs or reporting vandalism Cleaning fire grills Picking up trash in trash barrels (BLM employees will then collect and take to Miles City) Volunteering as a campground host for the BLM provides a great service to the public, and most hosts find the experience rewarding.
