What does a Rio Chama Steward do? Routine maintenance and care of recreation areas in the Chama River Canyon Wilderness and the Coyote Ranger District. Clean exterior and interior facilities (particularly bathroom buildings). Dispose of recreation site trash. Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds. Interact with the public by greeting guests, answering questions, providing information about the local area, etc. Act as the “eyes and ears” for identifying problems when Forest Service employees are not present. Some use of basic hand tools for light maintenance. Other duties as assigned. Note: The Chama River is managed through an interagency partnership between the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management; volunteers will work with both Forest Service and BLM employees. What about using a Government vehicle? Complete the Defensive Driving training and be government licensed before operating a vehicle. Safely commute in Forest Service vehicle to work site and abide with New Mexico State Laws. Communicate with Coyote Ranger Station and Santa Fe dispatch before going out to the field and upon return. Schedule: Work hours are flexible, between 0800-1700 on Thursdays through Mondays. Will have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off and requests for additional days off will be approved by supervisor prior to leave. Accommodations: An RV pad is provided at the District office with electricity, water, and trash service. This is a remote site without cell phone or Wi-Fi service available. Volunteer is allowed reimbursement for accrued expenses; amount is $20/person/on-duty days.
