Job Description

This position is based out of the Hatteras Island Visitor Center and Museum of the Sea at Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Buxton, NC. As team members, volunteers will perform duties to support visitor orientation and services on the grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and a small museum/information center which highlights seashore nature and history. Duties are primarily centered around customer service and administrative support. The volunteer will be supervised by the supervisory district interpreter.
DUTIES
Major Duties

● Actively participate in a safe workplace culture.
● Greet and introduce park visitors to the site on the grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and museum desk.
● Provide park and general information to the public.
● Be aware, receptive, and responsive to visitor needs.
● Answer numerous and repetitive questions about the park in a professional manner.
● Educate visitors on the regulations of the park and safety concerns.
● Track public use statistics.
● Assist with visitor center and museum opening and closing procedures.
● Operate audio-visual equipment to play park video in visitor center museum.
● Use telephone to provide information about the park.
● Distribute maps, brochures, and other printed materials.
● Monitor and keep informational brochures stocked and available to the visiting public.
● Handle negative contacts and sensitive topics in a professional manner.
● Report all negative contacts to volunteer supervisor.
● Use educational and informational capacity when appropriate to gain compliance with park regulations. Do not attempt to enforce any regulations by acting in a law enforcement capacity.
● Maintain positive and professional relationships among the staff and public.
● Monitor and report safety concerns and accidents/incidents to volunteer supervisor.
● Effectively respond to medical and other emergencies within scope of training.
● Receive and report lost and found items following park protocol.
● Dust and clean common areas of visitor center.
● Provide feedback to supervisor on ways to safely and efficiently improve visitor center and permit office operations.

Other Duties

● Perform light maintenance work, such as picking up litter.
● Walk and participate in the local parade, if needed.
● May perform a variety of administrative tasks, i.e. filing, opening boxes and paper bundles, stuffing envelopes, photocopying, reviewing text, maintain volunteer records.

Scope of Contacts 

Volunteer will have regular contact with visitors and/or staff members.

Work Schedule

● November 1, 2020 – February 28, 2021.
● Schedules are based on need for park operations.
● The volunteer will agree to a regular schedule of four or eight hours per shift that will include weekends.
● Volunteer will notify the volunteer supervisor of planned absences within a reasonable amount of time, usually not less than one week prior, or as soon as possible when the volunteer cannot be available to perform scheduled duties due to sickness or other reasons.

Uniform

While on duty, the volunteer will wear a NPS volunteer shirt and name tag (provided). A ball cap will be also provided for outdoor use only. The volunteer will supply his/her own khaki pants, brown belt, and brown shoes. The volunteer should look professional at all times and follow the Outer Banks Group’s volunteer uniform policy.

Government Vehicles & Property / Personal Equipment

  • The volunteer may only drive a government vehicle if indicated on the Volunteer Services Agreement (Form 301A). The volunteer must possess a valid state driver’s license and have it checked by a government official (supervisor.) Volunteer may not use government vehicles for any reason without prior approval from his/her direct supervisor.
  • Volunteer will be issued keys to buildings with the proper background clearance.
  • Volunteer will have access to government computers with the proper background clearance.
  • Personal vehicles/equipment will not be used.

Housing

To occupy park quarters/trailer sites, the volunteer must provide at least 32 hours of service per week for at least six weeks, not to exceed six months.

Reimbursement

Volunteer will not be reimbursed for expenses.

QUALIFICATIONS
● Ability to work independently with little to no supervision and as part of a team.
● Enjoy talking with and meeting people.
● Ability to communicate orally.
● Detail-oriented.
● Mental awareness and the ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
● Ability to research and communicate facts about the resources at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
● Ability to effectively deal with stressful situations and repetitive tasks.
● Organization and research skills are helpful.
