JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position

Bandelier National Monument is seeking camp hosts for the Juniper Family Campground. These positions require a minimum 4-month commitment. Camp hosts can expect to work at least 32-hours per week and must provide your own trailer or RV.

 

Juniper Family Campground

This partial reservation campground is located just inside the main entrance of Bandelier National Monument. It sits above 6600ft elevation on the mesa top in Piñon-Juniper Woodland. It is open year-round and consists of 3 camping loops with 53 individual campsites and 2 group sites. All campsites have picnic tables, fire rings, and bear lockers. Campsites in Loop A are offered as first-come, first-served year-round. Loops B & C are reservable in advance through Recreation.gov. Loop C closes during the winter (November-February). There are comfort stations in each camping loop with running water sinks, flush toilets, and dishwashing areas. No showers are available in the campground. Potable water is available at spigots throughout the campground. No hook-ups are available for campers, but there is an RV dump station located at campground entrance. Camp hosts have full hookups at host site and access to laundry and showers in staff housing area, all provided free of charge. Cell service is moderate to spotty, but camp hosts are provided a cell booster for use at host site. No Wi-Fi is supplied or available (must supply own). An enclosed cab electric vehicle is provided to camp host to perform duties.

 

General Position Description

Camp hosts reside in their own RV and are responsible for greeting visitors and helping guests solve problems in a friendly and professional manner. Hosts wear the National Park Service Volunteer-in-Parks (VIP) uniform while on duty. Camp hosts must work well with people, provide excellent customer

service, while being neat in appearance. Hosts are responsible for ensuring reserved campsites are tagged each day and performing compliance checks throughout the day, as well as other duties mentioned below. Candidates must be able to walk between 1-5 miles a day in all kinds of weather. Hosts are expected to work 32-40 hours a week, often during busy holidays and weekends. Fee Collection is NOT required of camp hosts. A minimum commitment of 4 moths is required.

 

Compensation

Camp hosts are provided full hook up campsite (water, sewer, electricity) within the campground. Cell booster is provided for use at campsite. Free shower and laundry facilities are available for use in staff housing area. Volunteers who work 250 hours or more qualify for a free Interagency “America the Beautiful” annual pass. In addition, small monetary stipend may be available.

 

DUTIES

Specific duties will include:

· Monitor campground reservations in Recreation.gov and record campground visitation information for park statistics. Assist visitors in locating their campsites and resolving any reservation disputes that arise.

· Answering visitor’s questions concerning daily park activities such as walks, talks and tours.

· Become familiar with the Park’s resources and be able to answer visitor’s questions concerning trails, points of interest, and recreational activities available.

· Represent Bandelier NM and the NPS in a professional and courteous manner.

· Assist the maintenance and ranger staff by performing light cleaning and maintenance in and around campground (restocking bathrooms, cleaning firepits, picking up litter, etc. Full cleaning of restrooms not required.)

· Act as the eyes and ears of park staff by reporting signs of resource or facility damage, maintenance needs, violations of rules and regulations, etc., to proper personnel.

· Comfort visitors during emergency situations. The incumbent may assist park rangers during minor medical incidents by performing first-aid for visitors (i.e. cleaning and bandaging minor cuts and abrasions) depending on his or her training and skill levels.

· Camp hosts are not expected to perform law enforcement duties.

Camp host positions require walking, bending, shoveling, raking and working outdoors and indoors in all types of weather. You may encounter bears, mountain lions, poisonous snakes and stinging insects in the course of your regular activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Desired qualifications include:

· Friendly and outgoing personality with good verbal and written communications skills.

· Ability to perform light cleanup work in outdoor conditions.

· Interact with a diversity of visitors while maintaining a positive, helpful, and non-confrontational attitude.

· Ability to serve independently without direct supervision.

· Minimum of a 16-week (or longer) commitment to position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & AREA INFORMATION

Located on the slopes of the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, Bandelier National Monument is a 33,000+ acre monument established to protect the Ancestral Pueblo sites found here. Bandelier includes a designated wilderness area of 23,267 acres and an 800-acre detached archeological section. The Monument preserves numerous archeological features of a late prehistoric period, which represents the transition of the Pueblo Indians from the prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan to modern traditions. Annual visitation exceeds 200,000. Bandelier is located 45 miles from Santa Fe, 32 miles from Espanola, and 12 miles from Los Alamos. The terrain is rugged but beautiful, from 5,300 to 10,199 feet with headquarters located at 6,000 feet. Summers are hot with afternoon thunderstorms being common in late summer.
