ADDRESS: Everglades National Park; 1 Flamingo Lodge Hwy; Homestead, Florida 33034

DEPT: National Park Service

DATES: 1/8/2023 – 4/29/2023

DESCRIPTION:

The Flamingo District of Everglades NP is seeking an enthusiastic individual or couple to volunteer. The selected candidate(s) will have the opportunity to work in our visitor center greeting visitors, answering questions, giving information, working with Junior Rangers, conducting interpretive programs and possibly canoe and kayak programs. Volunteers will also operate audio/visual equipment, answer phones, support the cooperative association’s retail operation and assist with special events.

This opportunity is ideal for those who enjoy working with the public and have an interest in history or nature. Volunteers should be able to stand/walk/hike for moderate periods of time, able to kayak/canoe, and willing to work outdoors in hot, humid weather. Typical hours for this position are from 7:45 AM to 5:15 PM inclusive of a 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute beaks.

Shifts are generally 9 hours long and you will be working 32 hours a week, alternating three / four days per week, which might include weekends and holidays.  Reliable personal transportation and a valid driver’s license are required. All volunteers must pass a federal background investigation. The associated costs of the investigation are paid for by the park. Please include in your application a resume and whether or not you have a current federal background check and an active PIV card. Please list two professional references who are unrelated to you and able to speak about your ability and/or aptitude for the position. Couples must complete applications for each person.

The park will train all volunteers and provide all necessary equipment and materials to safely conduct required duties.

Prior to the selection process, all volunteer applicants will be interviewed and will have the opportunity to speak with the volunteer supervisor. This will give applicants the opportunity to ask questions that are specific to their needs and situation.

An RV pad is available for volunteers willing to work 32 hours, alternating three / four days per week, from approximately 01/08/2023 – 4/29/2023. Amenities include water, electrical, and septic hook-ups, and free laundry facilities near the RV pad in the adjacent employee housing area. There are currently no other housing opportunities for this position. The pad is located less than 1-mile if walking or less than 2-miles by vehicle/bicycle from the Visitor Center. Public WiFi is available inside/adjacent to the visitor center. Overall, there is no cell or television signals in the area. Mosquitos can be intense.
