DESCRIPTION:

Volunteer will serve as a camp host on the Tonto National Forest. Volunteer’s responsibilities will include but not limited to: Working a minimum of 24 hours per week including weekends. Greet Forest visitors with pertinent local information and reminders of the Forest Service rules and regulations. Work campers also inform the public about camper safety, answer questions related to local recreation opportunities, and report compliance and maintenance problems to appropriate Forest Service personnel. Hosts are expected to keep track of Recreation.gov reservations in their campground by reviewing Daily Arrival Reports and updating campsite post signs. The ability to conduct light maintenance, such as monitoring restrooms, picking up ground litter, general painting, and tree trimming/vegetation control is required of all camp host positions. Volunteers are not to act in a law enforcement capacity. Volunteers must be prepared to work under varied conditions, including inclement weather.

 

Camp host volunteers are responsible for the routine and deferred maintenance of grounds and facilities within developed Forest Service recreation sites and /or conducting routine service and repairs to Forest Service tools and equipment. Camp hosts may work alone on specifically assigned projects or may work as part of a team to identify the maintenance needs of a site, including, but not limited to, general landscaping, mowing, weed-eating, tree trimming, hedging, painting buildings, kiosks, curbing and railings, sweeping sidewalks, stairways, replacing and installing signage, removing litter and debris, maintaining dumpsters, removing graffiti, cleaning up abandoned campfires and emptying fire grills. Special projects for volunteers with the appropriate training may include small engine repairs, design and metal fabrication, solar equipment maintenance, installation of kiosks or signage, revegetation of desert plants and earthwork and excavation projects.
